Healthcare Professionals Seeking to Educate Patients For a Better Future
Part of the job of being a healthcare professional, aside from diagnosing patients, prescribing medications, and conducting research, is to educate patients about their bodies and how to live more healthily in the future. The process of doing such is called patient education, and it has an enormous impact on how we, as individuals, go about our lives and care after our bodies. Many different types of healthcare professionals are frequently involved in educating patients and seeking to help the general public become healthier as a whole. Those on the forefront of educating patients today include primary care physicians, physical and occupational therapists, dieticians, and pharmacists.
Primary Care Physicians
Chances are that you have a good relationship with your primary care physician, or PCP. You visit him or her for routine checkups, sore throats, skin irritations, and so much more. Furthermore, it seems that each time you visit him or her, he or she will assess and diagnose your condition and prescribe medication or antibiotics to help improve your health. What you may not realize is happening when you visit your PCP, though, is that you are being educated about your condition and the ways that you can prevent it from happening in the future. For a sore throat, you may be advised to purchase a new toothbrush and avoid contact with other individuals who are feeling ill. Or, for a stomach virus, you may be advised to avoid overeating and to not eat after others. Ultimately, you adhere to these recommendations and help yourself avoid developing the same condition again in the future. It’s all thanks to patient education.
Physical Therapists
If you find yourself requiring the services of a physical therapy professional, you will likely leave your therapy sessions with much more than better muscle memory and improved motor function. During your sessions, there will likely be a dialogue between you and your physical therapist. The majority of what is being said back and forth is instruction of how to appropriately complete the exercises to regain muscle memory and motor function, but you will undoubtedly receive helpful advice as well. The advice you’ll receive will help you learn to use your body in a more careful way in the future to reduce the chances of the affected body part from becoming injured once again.
Dieticians
Dieticians have been helping individuals to understand their bodies better and eat healthier diets for a long time, but recently the demand for dieticians has risen immensely. As more and more people seek out the services of dieticians, they are becoming better informed about nutrition and the effects of foods on the body. Furthermore, appearances by dieticians on television shows and in online videos are allowing these healthcare professionals to reach a broad audience and share a wealth of knowledge in efforts to change eating habits of the general public for the better.
Pharmacists
Pharmacists of today are much more than men and women with a mortar and pestle, grinding away to concoct medications. Nowadays, pharmacists are tasked with ensuring the safety of drugs, especially when individuals are prescribed to take more than one medication simultaneously. Also, pharmacists of today are becoming more and more interactive with those individuals for whom they are filling prescriptions. Relationships are being formed, and as they continue to evolve, pharmacists are having greater opportunities to have professional conversations with patients, educating them about how certain medications work, the effects that chemical compounds have on the body, and why mixing one medication with another can be dangerous to do.
