Tips For Exercising in Clearwater, Florida
Whether you live in Clearwater, FL, or you’re visiting the area on vacation, there are numerous places you can achieve a killer workout. Rather than hit the gym or jog in the park, why not take advantage of Clearwater’s beach views? You’ll not only have stunning scenery to take in, but you’ll have the added advantage of walking or jogging on the sand, which can help you burn extra calories. If you plan on exercising on Clearwater Beach, then there are certain precautions you’ll need to take.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Clearwater, FL, has scorching temperatures practically year round. With warm temperatures comes perspiration, and with perspiration comes dehydration. It’s crucial that you drink plenty of water before and during your workout to fend off dehydration. If you start feeling excessively hot, dizzy, and/or nauseous, you should seek immediate help, as these are early signs of heat stroke.
Dress for Success
Though it may seem counterintuitive, you should wear pants and long sleeves to protect yourself from the harsh sun. Make sure your clothing is light and airy (no sweatpants!) and that it’s made from a material that will help wick moisture away from your body. As a general rule, you should avoid clothing made from cotton, which does little to keep the body cool and dry. You may want to invest in clothing that has built-in SPF, because the harsh Florida sun has been known to penetrate through clothing. You can find garments with built-in SPF at most sporting goods stores; perform a quick Internet search to find a retail outlet near you.
Slather on Sunscreen
While pants and long sleeves will protect the majority of your body from the sun’s rays, there will still be plenty of areas that are unprotected. Be sure to apply sunscreen to these areas – especially the face, ears, neck, and chest – and consider wearing a hat to further shield your face from the sun.
Don’t Push Yourself too Hard
If you’re unaccustomed to exercising on sand, then you might be in for a surprise. Even simple workouts like walking can become significantly more intense because of the resistance provided by the sand. Until you’re used to walking or jogging on the sand, make sure you aren’t covering too far of a distance (after all, you’ll need to turn around and head back to your starting point!). You can also expect your calf muscles to feel sore the next morning. Exercising on sand is no joke!
Take a Dip
At the culmination of your workout, practically nothing will feel better than taking a dip in the gorgeous Gulf of Mexico. You’ll instantly feel cool and refreshed and could even burn a few extra calories with a quick swim. Make sure you have some towels in your car, or you’ll be in for a wet ride home! Or, perhaps you’re lucky enough to be staying right on the beach. If that’s the case, then there’s probably no need to dry off. Just stay outside, bask in the sun’s rays, and take in your stunning surroundings.
