Few travelers know this but there are two kinds of Grand Canyon Helicopter tours: Basic and deluxe. Many purchase the former because it\’s cheaper. But the fact of the matter is that deluxe flights are the better value.

Perks

So how can a tour that cost more be the better offer? Perks. Take deluxe flights from Las Vegas. They depart from The Strip, come with limousine service to and from the guest\’s hotel and a flight over The Strip.

That\’s quite remarkable, especially compared to basic tours that use a van that provides shuttle service to the Boulder City Airport (about a 35-minute shuttle ride from Las Vegas). Further, when you finish your basic tour, you skip The Strip flyover and get in a van for the ride back.

Another KEY thing about deluxe tours is the EC 130. This specific helicopter is the absolute best for aerial sightseeing. It ranks as such because it features a 180-degree windshield, stadium-style bucket seats and an aerodynamic design that makes it fly smoothly through the air.

Las Vegas

Vegas deluxe tours are available in air-only and landing tours. Both go over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam before entering National Park airspace. Air-only flights will turn back to Vegas while landing tours will go to the bottom or the top or both.

Air-only is great for travelers who have limited time to sightsee the Canyon. My preference, however, is for landing tours, and particularly the one that goes to the bottom of the Canyon for a picnic. I like it because it lets you experience the Canyon from the air and ground.

Landing tours, which are ONLY available from Las Vegas (you can\’t do them at the South Rim), can also be extended to include a Colorado River boat ride and tickets to Skywalk, the glass bridge that lets you walk 70 feet over the edge before being suspended 4,000 feet over the bottom.

South Rim

The South Rim is located in northern Arizona near the Utah border. There you can pick between 30-minute and 50-minute deluxe flights. The shorter one goes across the Canyon and back. The longer one does a loop that covers nearly 75 percent of the entire National Park (my #1 choice).

Five-star helicopters are in high demand. This means they are susceptible to selling out. To avoid this situation, I strongly recommend purchasing your tickets one-to-two weeks prior to your desired departure date. Do this and you\’ll typically get the flight you want at the time you want (mornings are best).

I also recommend you book your flight online. Indeed, 5-star helicopter rides are more expensive, but if you purchase then on the Internet, you\’ll get them at a discount. Just recently, for example, I was able to get a Vegas landing tour for a client at nearly a 20 percent discount.

Conclusion

When you purchase a Grand Canyon helicopter tour, you\’ll have a choice between basic and deluxe. I recommend deluxe. I say this because I believe they are the better value. And if you are serious about flying the best, then make sure you buy your tickets ahead of time. Lastly, book online. It makes the whole purchase process easier and prices are typically cheaper.
