The Benefits of Using LED Lighting in Your Home

Light Emitting Diodes, or LED lights for short, present the newest alternative lighting source available in the market today. This recent invention has revolutionized lighting by changing the way we produce illumination. Instead of the traditional method of producing light through heat, LEDs create light through a process called electroluminescence.

However, the technology behind LED has made it more pricey than most sources. In fact, compared to candles, incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, LED light bulbs cost significantly more. But despite being more expensive than other lighting alternatives, the many advantages of it provide more than enough reasons for consumers to try it out especially at home.

1) Lower Energy Consumption

LED light bulbs do not require a lot of energy in order to produce light. They produce light in a process known as electroluminescence instead of converting electrical energy into heat (like in the case of candles or incandescent bulbs). To put it simply, it changes the state of an electron to make it glow. This method eliminates, or at least considerably reduces, the amount of energy wasted when producing light. Also, since the structure and volume is so much less than that of ordinary bulbs, less wattage is required to produce the same amount of illumination.

2) Longer Lifespan

Compared to other lighting alternatives, LED light bulbs usually last longer from around 25,000 to 50,000 hours depending on temperature and current settings. Some LED light bulbs even take 100,000 hours before complete failure is achieved. This is because LED lighting experience minimal wear and tear as opposed to other lighting sources. They do not have any shortening wicks, burning filaments, or consumable vapors.

Fluorescent bulbs are reported to last only for 10,000 to 15,000 hours.

3) Smaller size

Since the mechanism behind LED depends solely on the size of the semiconductor chip, there is no need for voluminous confinements. The smaller the chip is, the smaller the LED light produced. This, however, does not necessarily translate to luminous intensity. It does not mean that just because LED light bulbs are smaller, they are automatically dimmer than lights produced by other sources.

On The Contrary, LED lighting, depending on the type and function, can sometimes be brighter than other sources of light.

4) Toughness

Because there are basically no moving parts in LED light bulbs, they are more resistant to shocks and vibrations. Also, because their structure has eliminated the need for glass (and other fragile materials), they are generally more robust and tougher than bulbs, thereby making it the most durable source of lighting.

5) Faster switching

In the case of fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, light is produced as a result of superheating a medium. This is not the same for LED lighting. As soon as electricity flows through the chip, electroluminescence almost instantly happens. This enables LED light bulbs to be switched on and off faster than other sources of light. In fact, it can achieve full brightness in a matter of microseconds.

6) No toxicity

LED lamps do not contain Mercury vapor unlike fluorescent lamps. They are therefore safer to dispose of and less toxic than regular fluorescent bulbs

The above are some of the great advantages of using LED lighting in your home.
