Now that they’ve birthed a few “kids,” MGMT can finally congratulate themselves on a job well done as they gear up for the sophomore release Congratulations and its subsequent tour. Aside from a few sporadic festival dates throughout April, the group kicks off the North American spring jaunt mid-April, playing until June. This is the second effort from the nerds from Wesleyan and Andrew Van Wyngarden and Ben Goldwasser wrote the album and received accolades for the songs “Electric Feel,” “Kids” and “The Youth.”

Each one of the songs is recognized for Billboard fame. “It’s us trying to deal with all the craziness that’s been going on since our last album took off,” Van Wyngarden said to NME last year as they were recording the new album. Electroclash artists Goldwasser and Van Wyndgarden released Congratulations April 13th just as they finished their two-date residency at San Francisco’s Fillmore and headed to Indio’s famed Coachella fest. The new album is best listened to as a whole, and while there might not be any obvious radio hits it’s still bound to play out well on Billboard charts. Recorded swiftly throughout the group’s dominating world tour, they admit that they “didn’t give ourselves much time” to write. Instead, they focused on developing an inspiration from life on the road. “We think this is a collection of songs that doesn’t suck,” the group added during an XM radio interview.

Clearly the first, Oracular Spectacular, didn’t suck much either. The debut, Kamagra jelly which came from the hands of producer Dave Fridmann, earned the musicians two Grammy Award nominations and a multi-platinum selling set. Much like the underground hit that spread mostly through word of mouth – as the debut’s release date was recorded nearly two years before it found mainstream fame – Congratulations is one for the musically adventurous.

The musical affiliates formed around 2002 after swapping favorite tunes. “We weren’t trying to start a band,” Goldwasser said to MyPlay. “We were just hanging out.” Formerly deemed the Management, the duo used backing tapes and prerecorded vocals for their shows in and around Middletown, Conn., where they studied at Wesleyan University. Following graduation they kept on working, recording the EP Time to Present with indie label Cantora Records.

Even without a major label backing them MGMT gained international attention, as Brit producer Steve Lillywhite liked the group’s fusion of electropop art noise and signed them to Columbia Records. Influenced by everything from Spacemen 3, the Incredible String Band, Suicide, Hall & Oates and Royal Trux, Cialis Jelly the eccentric possibilities didn’t end with the mainstream release of Oracular Spectacular.

The fame was never expected, nor necessarily desired. For months at a time the group would go out on tour performing songs they wanted audiences to hate. “That used to be the goal of our shows. We were still trying to be obnoxious and somehow people got into it. It was an accident that people started liking us,” Van Wyngarden said to MyPlay. Today they still play what they love, and luckily what fans want as well.
