Purdue University’s men’s basketball team might be part of the Big Ten, but it certainly can’t function without the Big Three: JaJuan Johnson, E’Twaun Moore and Robbie Hummel. The elite triple-threat helped to make Purdue a Top Five seed in the NCAAs for most of the 2009-10 season before Hummel’s ACL injury put them out of contention for the Final Four, but the Boilermakers might sooner than expected experience a rebuilding period.

Johnson and Moore, both juniors at Purdue, have declared for the 2010 NBA Draft, entering their names into contention to go pro a year before they’re set to graduate. Johnson and Moore have been playing together all three years they’ve been at Purdue, and if the leading scorers leave it could be a blow for this dedicated Boilermakers team.

Just because they put their names in the draft doesn’t mean they’ll definitely go pro this year, however. At this point, both players are gathering more information about the forthcoming NBA Draft, and they still have the option of pulling out of the draft, as underclassmen without agents are eligible to withdraw their names from consideration anytime before May 8.

For JaJuan Johnson, entering his name in this year’s draft is all about feeling out options. Johnson told the Indianapolis Star, “I’m confident that this process will make me stronger as a person and a player. It’s important to me to leave open the option of returning to Purdue, but I also want to take the first step toward getting my game ready for the next level.”

Of course, when weighing the decision to stay one more year at Purdue in order to ripen even more, Johnson will be tempted with what many Purdue fans came to expect this year: an NCAA title. With Robbie Hummel back in the mix for next season, the Boilermakers are looking strong – but only if Johnson and Moore stay put under Matt Painter’s reign. ESPN’s Andy Katz has already made predictions for the 2010-11 season, and he has Purdue ranked the early No. 1 seed for next year if Hummel, Johnson and Moore all return to combine forces for one more round on the hardwood.

Purdue posted a solid run in the NCAA tourney this year but fell short after Hummel tore his ACL in one of the final games of the regular season. Boilermakers fans are already looking forward to next year’s college basketball season, and Purdue Boilermakers basketball tickets are already sought-after items in the Big Ten for next year.

For now, Purdue basketball fans continue to hold their breaths and hope for JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore to make it back to Purdue for one more year with the Boilermakers, and coach Matt Painter seems confident about their return. He told the Indianapolis Star, “There are a lot of positives that can come out of the information gathering that takes place this time of year. Both JaJuan and E’Twaun have our full support as they start the process of finding out where they stand in the eyes of NBA personnel.”
