Elton John Tickets – Elton, Rush and the Politics Game
All’s fair in love and war. But what about in politics, the most dangerous game of all? That’s the question that pundits need to ask themselves in the wake of the news that Elton John, famous and fabulously out gay man and AIDS awareness advocate, served as the weekend entertainment for rotund conservative talk-jock Rush Limbaugh, a man whose mic has picked up more than a few statements that have angered the left, and the gay left especially.
The Internet was abuzz after Limbaugh’s June 5 wedding to fiancee Kathryn Rogers, where Elton was invited (and paid) to perform. How could Elton play “Rocket Man” for an audience that included Sean Hannity, Karl Rove and a liberal’s rogue’s gallery of conservative commentators? The question is whether there’s as much controversy here as everyone has made out.
For sure, Elton is a pretty unusual pick for such an event considering his politics. The Guardian printed an article in the aftermath of the wedding wondering why Elton went so cheap; a report the previous year had stated that he was the second most expensive pop star to hire for private parties, with most performances costing nearly $2 million. That’s not exactly birthday clown prices. But Limbaugh managed to snag him at a bargain: a cool $1 million for an evening of piano-rock classics.
There’s also the AIDS issue. Elton John is known for playing private parties for exorbitant fees, which benefit his Elton John AIDS Foundation, a very worthy charity that works to provide education and prevention tools to fight AIDS. The conflict here, as The Guardian pointed out, is that Rush famously referred to AIDS as a “hyped” disease, one that Kamagra jelly never posed a serious threat to the straight population.
There may be some hypocrisy at play. But most of the pundits howling over this probably didn’t raise $1 million for AIDS research and awareness this weekend, so maybe they should cut Elton some slack.
Furthermore, the political crossing of streams isn’t as severe as it seems. The LA Times Ministry of Gossip pointed out recently that Elton has famously befriended and performed for people whose opinions he doesn’t share, including Eminem and multiple parties in the Middle East, where his views on gay rights are largely not shared. As they said, “Perhaps conservative and liberal streams can indeed cross without creating a rip in the space-time continuum.”
The gossip blog followed up by noting Megyn Kelly of Fox News had the following to say about Elton’s conduct at the wedding: “Elton John actually had nothing but nice things to say about Rush Limbaugh and the happy couple, and said he’s all about tearing down walls and building bridges.” He followed up by inviting Rush and his new wife to his home, which he shares with civil partner David Furnish.
The final shock of the wedding: the surprisingly good-natured ribbing Rush got from the snarkmeisters at Gawker, who flew a banner Tadalis SX over the event wishing him “congrats on your 4th marriage.” If they can tone down the rhetoric, maybe there’s hope for America’s political beasts yet.
