Free Things to Do in New York

You may have heard rumors that visiting New York can be an expensive trip. However, it does not have to be.

In fact, there are plenty of attractions and activities in this east coast state that will not cost you a dime. If you are headed to New York City, there are plenty of free sites.

For example, the Staten Island Ferry does not cost a thing. The ride on this ferry provides passengers with great views of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor, and Ellis Island.

Once you get to Staten Island you will have to get off of the boat and get back in line for the trip back to Manhattan, but it is well worth it. After that, check out the iconic Times Square.

Here you can see all of the signs and lights of this well known New York attraction. Then head over to another very popular spot, Central Park.

This huge park is full of things to do and you won’t spend any money while you are at it; unless you decide to purchase something from one of the vendors during your visit. You can take a free walking tour of the park or visit one of the many play areas or gardens.

You may also be entertained by some street performers here. After your visit to the park, take in the sites at the Rockefeller Center.

Here you will see Radio City Music Hall and the NBC studio. However, if you decide to take a tour of one of these places, it will cost you money.

Also located on Rockefeller Plaza is the FDNY Fire Zone. It is a fun place for all ages.

Kids can climb in fire trucks, try on gear and your whole group will learn more about fire safety. If you have children, they will love to visit FAO Schwartz, a huge toy store.

This toy store has more than just toys for sale, there are also plenty of exhibits and toys for everyone to try out. There are also plenty of other exciting stores to check out, although if you are looking to save money, you may just want to window shop.

If interested, check out Saks 5th Avenue, SoHo, Chinatown, and Greenwich Village for some interesting shops. A great way to get more acquainted with this city is to take a free tour.

Volunteers from Big Apple Greeter Tours will take you around the city and introduce you to all of the many sites. One last thing to do in the Big Apple is check out a live taping of Good Morning America.

Tickets are free but do have to be requested online prior to your visit. New York City is not the only city in New York that offers free activities, there are plenty more.

If you are headed to Buffalo, check out Niagara Falls. You may have to pay for parking, but visiting the falls is free and is quite a site to see.

Also free in Buffalo is a museum, the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum. Another fun spot to check out in Buffalo is Delaware Park.

Each year during the summer visitors can view Shakespeare in the Park here. If you are headed to Albany, the state capitol, a few things to do there without having to pay are visit the Albany Urban Cultural Park Visitor Center, check out the New York State Museum, take a New York State Capitol Tour, or visit one of these parks: Saratoga Spa State Park, John Boyd Thacher State Park, or Washington Park.

Another large city you may be visiting in this state is Rochester. In the middle of the city you can view the High Falls.

These waterfalls are found downtown and are very beautiful. About 30 min. away from Rochester you will find a small town called Palmyra.

This town has a lot of rich history, especially for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They offer many free sites including a visitor’s center, a historic farm called the Joseph Smith Farm, a Book of Mormon historic publication site at the Grandin Building on Main Street, and each summer they put on a free pageant at the Hill Cumorah.

No matter what part of New York you are visiting, you are sure to have a fabulous time. You can also find plenty to do without burning a hole in your wallet!
