Sure, Mike “The Situation” and DJ Pauly D from MTV’s hit reality show Jersey Shore might be causing quite a stir, but theater fans know that the original boys from Jersey are Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Frankie Valli was born Francis Casteluccio in Newark, N.J. and expressed an interest in music early on. At the encouragement of his mother, the young hopeful musician listened to R&B groups like the Drifters and the Clovers , but everything changed when he saw Frank Sinatra perform at the age Levitra of seven. After releasing a few solo recordings, Valli formed his first band with guitarist brothers Nick and Tommy DeVito and bassist Hank Makewski.
The group scored a minor hit under the name the Four Lovers in 1956, performing on the Ed Sullivan Show and meeting fellow rising star Elvis Presley. Nick DeVito and Majewski were replaced by Bob Guadio and Nick Massi in 1960 and the group changed their name to the Four Seasons, soon signing with Vee-Jee records and scoring a hit with “Sherry” in 1962.
“Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Stay” and “Alone” followed in the No. 1 footsteps of “Sherry,” and the Four Seasons enjoyed success while enduring lineup changes through the late 1960s. Frankie Valli launched a concurrent solo career in 1965 and the group effectively began releasing songs as Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. After a few slow years, the group and Valli’s solo career made comebacks in 1975, but Valli exited the lineup it 1979 and the group disbanded in 1979. Much to the delight of fans, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons reunited in 1980 and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
