Graphic Artist Finds New Interest in Pet Painting

A graphic artist feels little faces watching her whenever she works at home. She spends most of her time at her home handling form designs, creating print ads or coupons work that can be tedious and colorless.

Outside her office sit four dogs and four cats, watching her through a screened door.

A new career entered her mind when she saw the faces. During her trip to Texas to visit her parents, he looked at the animals’ pictures and proceeded to put their images on canvas.

She tries to match colors with personalities in her portraits of the different animals.

Capturing the essence of the animals is what she wants to achieve in her paintings. With different colors, I can paint the animal’s personality and looks.

It was on a camping trip in Mississippi that she created her first painting, a mixed breed. It was a dog which never left the couple, and whose color was red.

Because her dog was jealous, she decided to pain him green. The painting of animals using nontraditional colors was also done by an artist before her.

A red eyed blue dog was the painting that one cajun artist made in 1984 in commemoration of his dog who died in 1980.

People would really notice the blue dog in her paintings. There are those who find the blue paintings comical, but the artist actually sees a haunting picture in these paintings.

There is a spiritual meaning in each of the paintings if you look deeper than its comical exterior. Questions that have haunted man since existence are now being asked us by the dog in the painting.

The character of the animal has to be seen in her art. She makes use of electrifying colors and unusual patterns.

All the animals she adopted were either from a shelter or were wandering in the streets. The newest dog she adopted was one who wandered from house to house.

She left fliers in local veterinarian offices last summer to market her pet portraits. She asks clients to give her an idea of the animal’s personality and also a photograph.

She said she’d pick the colors once she understands the animal. There is just something that these portraits give that satisfies customers, said the owner.

The painting of her was a bright yellow, revealing her energetic side. People who know the subjects in portraits will appreciate them more, said the artist owner of a gallery in Memphis.

Looking at a portrait is different from actually appreciating its artistic elements.
