If you want to work at home, find medical topics interesting, and enjoy a challenge, medical transcription is probably a great career choice for you. There’s so much to love about it if you have the skills and interest.

1. The ability to work at home.

Not everyone loves working at home, but if you love it, you probably really, really love it. I can hardly imagine working outside the home these days. Working at home has so many advantages for me.

Many medical transcription jobs are at home these days. Most of the work is done over the internet, and it’s simply easier for doctors and hospitals to send the work out than it is for them to provide office space.

Working at home means you don’t have strictly set hours that you must be transcribing. You can mostly set your own, although sometimes you may be called for extra work if there’s a lot of need, and other times there won’t be work there when you’re ready to start transcribing. Those are both exceptions rather than rules, however.

Working at home means you can decide if childcare is necessary. It may not be. You may need help if you have toddlers running about and don’t want to work early mornings or into the night.

2. The software.

The software used by medical transcriptionists is wonderful. You can get word expansion software that takes a few letters you’ve typed, and it comes out with complete words or sentences. That’s a huge help in productivity.

Medical transcription software also allows you to receive your work over the internet and return it the same way. That’s a huge improvement over when even at home transcriptionists had to pick up and drop off work.

3. The challenge.

Medical transcription work is a good kind of challenging. It’s not something just anyone can do, much less love.

You have to know how to figure out what the doctor’s saying, even if he or she dictated while eating.

You have to know where to find out what that new medication is that the doctor just prescribed for the patient, or what that unfamiliar procedure was. You’ll constantly be learning new things when you work as a medical transcriptionist.

4. The pay.

Medical transcription pays pretty well, especially as your skills improve. Plus you lose less of your pay to things like driving to work, eating out, childcare and maintaining a professional wardrobe.

Your pay rate is all about your skills. You can increase your pay by transcribing faster and using word expansion software. Difficult to understand doctors and unfamiliar terminology can slow you down, but with practice even these aren’t so bad.
