Bogota, An Exciting Destination

To get to Bogota from outside Colombia is easy. All the major airlines operating in North America also make scheduled stops at Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport. Flights from major North America Cities such as New York, Washington, San Francisco and Los Angeles are common. For those visiting Bogota from within Colombia, many daily domestic flights operate from the Medellin and Cali areas. At least 10 daily flights operate out of Cartagena.

Getting to the City from the airport is also quite easy. You can use either the taxis or buses. The taxis are a bit pricier though. Before leaving the taxi racks, a receipt is issued indicating amount of fare payable to your preferred destination. The taxi driver will then drop you at your location before receiving payment from you. Using the bus, on the other hand, requires a seasoned traveler who knows his/her way around the city. The buses follow predefined routes and do not divert.

The city divides into 4 regions. The southern side of the city is generally inhabited by the poorer sections of the city. The central region of the city hosts various government and council offices. The third region, El Occidente has a number of great sporting venues. The middle to upper class income earners also live in this part of the city. This region also has a number of parks to visit. The Northern region is different from the other regions. It hosts upscale accommodation and affluent shopping outlets, boutiques, cafes and nightclubs. Bogota is also divided into 20 districts, the oldest being La Candelaria. It was the original location of the city. As the city developed, it expanded northward and westward. This area has not changed much. The streets are still paved with cobblestones, while the colonial buildings remain standing to date.

While in Bogota, visit the Monserrate. This is a highly respected religious site. It stands at an altitude of 2000 feet above Bogota. From that location, one has a panoramic view of Bogota. The Monserrate has lush gardens and old church buildings. Take time to visit the local shops and buy souvenir crafts at a bargain. You also have an opportunity to visit the Salt Cathedral, built in times past by the miners.

Bogota has a number of museums among them, the Botero Museum, the Museum of Gold and the Museum of Colonial Arts. Every weekend artists get an opportunity to display their talent. The Avenida Septima is closed to traffic over the weekends and a host of street performers, magicians and hawkers of various crafts get an opportunity to entertain and ply their trade in the City.
