Be A Better Husband Starting Today
Just yesterday, I reached the heart-wrenching conclusion to a novel I had been reading for about a month. After the death of the main character, there was talk of his canonization. The narrator, speaking from the perspective of his wife, said that no married woman could ever take her spouse to be a saint. Despite the somber tone, I laughed–because it’s so true!
We’re all human, so we are bound to show our foibles sometimes–especially in marriage. Women and men have typical complaints about each other–he doesn’t help around the house; she is so demanding. But instead of focusing on what she might be doing wrong, shift your focus to what YOU can do to make things better.
The best first step is to sit down with your spouse and specifically ask her about two or three things you need to personally work on to improve your relationship and alleviate her stress. Don’t get defensive and turn it into a fight–just listen calmly and ask her for a few straightforward solutions. Then be willing to put them into practice as best you can.
This can be challenging, especially when you are juggling all kinds of other obligations, such as a demanding career, community responsibilities, and church activities. But saying no to these outside requests on occasion in favor of spending time with your wife or doing something special for her will show her that she is your top priority.
Do you feel like you are just too busy to help out around the house, but you realize your spouse is overwhelmed with the bulk of the housework? You may want to take a look at your budget and see if you can hire a professional housecleaner, even if it’s for only a few hours each day, or every other day.
There are many affordable options when it comes to having hired help, but make sure you go through a licensed company instead of hiring someone privately.
Try to incorporate kind words and gestures into your daily routine. Too many of us neglect to nurture our relationships, thinking that those we love know our feelings. How hard is it for you to open your mouth and compliment your spouse? Tell her she’s beautiful; tell her she’s capable and smart.
Never suppress a sweet or generous thought. If you have the fleeting thought to bring your sweetheart flowers, write it down so you don’t forget, and then just do it! If you have the Viagra Professional thought that your spouse is always sweet and kind, tell her that you think so.
Marriage is about being flexible in a variety of ways. Focus on being a better husband, starting today.
