My family owns a poultry farm. They grow 20,000 chicks for 35 days. This is where we met Michael. Michael is a Veterinary Technologist. He works hand in hand with the city veterinarian to ensure that the chickens we grow are safe to eat.

“Ma’am, we need to vaccinate your chickens after every 7 days to ensure that they grow healthy,” he paused and checked his clipboard, “now is day 1, I will be back again on day 7, that will be on the third of this month and we will proceed with the vaccination. I would like you prepare the medicine before we start the process. The medicine should be refrigerated at all time but not frozen. We will be giving an eye vaccine and it will be two drops per eye.” He hoisted up a 500ml bottle. “This size would be enough for five thousand chicks.”

I stared at him amazed. He really wants us poultry growers to be involved in the process. I appreciate the gesture since it is our duty to grow quality chickens. “You have told us to put up the infrared lights. What is that for?”

“Ah yes, there should be one infrared light on top of each brooder. That will give heat for the Tadalis SX chickens as they grow.” The chicks are grouped by brooders. Each two thousand chicks are grouped into an enclosure. “These chicks should always be separated from each other. Look at those” he pointed at the group of chicks gathering closely, “they should be apart, because such closeness could bring injury to each other. Their bones are weak and in cases where they gather so close they could step on each other and breaking each other’s legs. The infrared lights would give them sufficient heat so that they won’t be all over each other anymore.”

“Alright, I will have more infrared lights put up for the rest of the brooders then.” I checked my own clipboard and asked, “There were some skim milk that arrived yesterday. The delivery said that it’s for the chickens?” I was a little puzzled why the chickens would need milk.

“Well, like humans, chickens need that to for protein and fats. Your chicks will grow faster with that.”

“Oh, I see. Thanks, Michael that was really enlightening.” I said.

“No problem. Anytime. In case you have more questions, you could go visit me at the city veterinarian office and I could give you pamphlets on poultry raising, ok? I will be there to check on the chickens as they grow.”

“I didn’t know that taking care of chickens is as meticulous as this.”

“Well, sounds like that but actually once you get the hang of it it’s quite enjoying. You might actually love it.”

“I think that this job is really right for you. You have this innate character of looking after the chickens.” I told him.

Michael smiled and quipped, “Well that and the fact that I couldn’t resist a chicken that is finger lickin’ good.”
