What to See and Do in London
London is one of the most vibrant cities in the world. This has been the case for the better part of the last 1000 years. If you go to London there is plenty to see and do and you want to make sure that you don’t miss any of the sights. If London doesn’t impress you, you are very hard to please.
If it is your first time to London, you may wish to find your bearing by taking a tour on a double-decker bus. The tour will allow you to see what there is and where things are situated vis a vis each other. The Thames cuts in and out of London and you can take a boat ride along the Thames. This can be a fantastic thing to do especially at night.
London is full of history and tradition and you will want to see all of these sites. There is Big Ben, the House of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. At the Abbey you have the likes of Geoffrey Chaucer, Lord Byron, Charles Dickens, Isaac Newton as well as many kings and queens buried there. You have royalty there such as Elizabeth I and Henry VII.
Speaking of royalty, you can’t go to London without seeing Buckingham Palace. This is the official London residence of the reigning British monarch. It is a highlight of any tour to London. If you are lucky you may even get a glimpse of some members of the royal family.
If you like sports there is plenty of sports you can watch while in London. Start with football; you have teams such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Fulham that are all based in London. This means that there is going to be some form of major football played in London between August and May. Tickets aren’t always easy to get so plan ahead.
There is also cricket for people who are fond of this most colonial of games. The Oval and Lords are two cricket grounds which are based in London. The cricket season runs from April to September so you can watch some cricket if you are in London between this time. Cricket though isn’t for everyone so be prepared to be bored.
Shopping is something that people love to do in London. You have Marks and Spencer which is one of the world’s best department stores. Harrods is another icon in the shopping world. Apart from this you can go shopping to places such as Oxford Street, Carnaby Street and Soho for fashion bargains. You can find great bargains but you should also be prepared to spend well.
The Tower of London is one of London’s most well known landmarks. This was the place where undesirables were locked up. Now it is open to visitors and is worthwhile seeing if you have never been there before. The same applies to Madame Tussauds, which is the famous wax museum.
