Learning a new language is a very powerful thing. It gives you access to a people and culture that otherwise you could never have. It opens up doors and allows you to interact with the people. Apart from that you can read their newspapers and books and watch their television shows.

Sure you can get things translated but that doesn’t do it justice. Translating something like Italian or French into English is going to give you general broad message but it won’t allow you to get to the real heart of the message. There are some things that are simply untranslatable. Sure you will get a general idea but knowing the language will allow you to have a real insight.

It is like people who study the Old Testament. You can get one sort of message reading it in English but then a whole other one doing so in Hebrew. But once you study Hebrew and now able to read it without having to rely on the translation your understanding is going to change. The use of language is very powerful and although two Hebrew words can be translated into the exact same English one – in Hebrew they have a very distinct and separate meaning. This is the power of learning a language.

The same can be applied to something like opera. Most operas are written in languages such as Italian, French and German. Understanding these languages will give you a far greater appreciation of what is happening. It just makes sense that this is the case as things are always lost in translation.
