Why should food be any different? In the case of natural disasters, many are all too often starved because their food is destroyed or expensive after such a disaster.

If the area in which you live is prone to any of these forms of devastation, you should keep an emergency food kit stocked with foods to keep you healthy until the disaster has passed.

There are many things to consider when putting together your emergency food pantry. A good way to start is by making a list of all the things you will need.

This way you can put it together one step at a time and keep track of the things that you already have as opposed to what you do not have. You will need to include protein, carbohydrates and fats to keep your energy high.

Fruits like raisins, dried bananas, apricots and more are great ways to get the nutrition and natural sugars from fruit into your emergency food supply. Many people even enjoy the taste of them which require no preparation.

Whole grain crackers are a great replacement for bread. The carbs can keep you going through tough times while keeping you energized and strengthened.

Nuts are another great way to get protein in your system as well as fiber and healthy fats. You can buy canned items from almonds and walnuts to cashews and pecans.

Granola bars are a good way to get something sweet in that also has a lot of nutritional value. These are high in energy and most people enjoy them.

Dry cereals are also fortified with extra vitamins and minerals. They can be eaten dry, so they are simple to prepare and keep stored.

Juice boxes are also simple to purchase and store. They come in single serving sizes that do not need to be refrigerated, which is helpful.

Make sure to choose juices that are made from 100% fruit. This will be a healthy choice for you and your family.

Other drinks to consider are those with electrolytes like Gatorade and Powerade. These are good additions to your emergency collection as your body may need the added strength from electrolytes.
