How To Tow With Style
Towing anything can be very tricky, especially if its for first time. Driving a vehicle all by itself is very different than driving while towing. There are a few details that many people miss that will make your experience much more enjoyable. Not knowing how to load your trailer or hitch your tow vehicle can lead to damaged property or even more dangerous problems such as flipping, causing and accident or jackknifing.
Now don’t worry too much while it might sound complicated the first time there are many easy steps you can take to make sure you have a save and enjoyable towing experience. Knowing what checkups to do, how much weight you can tow and the proper way to drive while pulling another set of wheels are just a few of the things you should know.
Fist things first, taking on more than you can chew always causes problems. The ‘towing’ capacity of a car, suv or truck is the manufactures recommended limit on how much weight you should pull. You should go on line or find your own copy of the owner’s manual. This will give you the exact limit you can take. They will talk about a few different terms such as base curb weight (the amount your car or truck weighs with a full tank of gas) and allowable payload ( the maximum weight you can move including the passengers and anything in the vehicle as well)
If you are not moving a camper or something that is pretty much stuck in place then you need to remember to distribute the weight properly. You don’t want Brand Viagra things falling on top of each other and is you make some thing top heavy it is easy to tip over. Try and pack everything heave as close to the ground as possible. This will insure a low center of gravity.
Another reason for trying to keep everything as low as possible is visibility. Many times good packing will still allow you to use your rear view mirrors. Unfortunately sometimes its unavoidable and you will no longer be able to see out that mirror, so make sure you can see out the side mirrors or you are just asking for trouble.
What many people don’t realize is that the key to visibility is not being able to see but being seen your self! Tailors block off your brake lights and at night can make it very hard to be seen. It is very important to have light on the item you are towing and its actually the law in most states. Make sure you hook the lights up with your car so they turn on when appropriate.
