The U.S. Open will invade Queens, N.Y. during the last week of August and into the month of September, and there are several storylines already making the tennis tournament one of sports’ most-anticipated events of the year. Here’s a preview of what is helping to sell tennis tickets to this year.

On the men’s side, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are always the two top netters to keep an eye on. After Federer’s quick exit from Wimbledon earlier this summer, it will be interesting to see if he can regain his footing at the U.S. Open. Federer has a lot to prove in 2010, especially considering that he is not the reigning champion from the ’09 tourney in Queens. Federer is the victor from 2004-2008, but last year it was Juan Martin del Potro who was crowned champion at the event.

This year, del Potro won’t be a threat, as he is recovering from a wrist injury and doesn’t look to be a contender at the U.S. Open. This still leaves a number of hungry competitors out for a win, however, including players like Robin Soderling, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. Nadal is coming off a big win at Wimbledon and looks to be unstoppable if he can stay healthy, especially since he’s out to capture that elusive first win.

Nadal has never before won the hard court tournament but 2010 looks to be his year, especially judging by the way he’s been playing lately. Before his big win at Wimbledon earlier this summer, Nadal’s uncle and coach Toni Nadal said, “When he wins the tournament here in Wimbledon, he can win the U.S. Open. But it’s very difficult.”

While Rafael Nadal will be battling for his first-ever U.S. Open title this August in men’s tournament play, it’s all about Serena Williams on the women’s side. Though Kim Clijsters is the defending champion, Williams is on a hot streak that could plow straight through Queens this fall. Williams was absolutely unstoppable at Wimbledon this summer and has won three times – in 1999, 2002 and 2008. She’s now looking to add to her total numbers in wins, which is currently at 13 career Grand Slam titles, and 2010 looks to be a solid year to take the Open for the fourth time.

Of course, Serena Williams will have some stiff competition from the best female players in the world, including sister Venus Williams, the current WTA No. 3. The Williams sisters are likely to be the stars of the show at this year’s Queens tournament, especially as some other top female netters might be missing in action from the court next month.

Belgian Justine Henin has already pulled out of the U.S. Open after sustaining a partial ligament fracture of the right elbow during her match against Kim Clijsters at Wimbledon. WTA No. 3 Jelena Jankovic could also be out for the upcoming tourney, as she retired from Wimbledon with a back injury during her fourth-round match against Vera Zvonareva.

The 2010 U.S. Open in New York is one of the most-watched Grand Slam tournaments of the year, and tickets to this year’s tourney are available online.
