The Big Blow on a Japanese Computer Company

A new and ingenious plan to earn from the laptop computer industry was devised by a Texas personal injury lawyer.

All you need to do is file a lawsuit against a corporation for a problem that doesn’t exist. If you are one of those working in the market for laptop computers, this is not something to laugh about.

Copycat lawsuits have been filed against five other companies, and price increases may be just around the corner.

A $9 billion lawsuit was filed by a lawyer against a Japanese appliance maker, and the entire escapade ended with the lawyer getting a $2 billion settlement from the company.

Settling the suit was, for the company, a better choice than battling the lawsuit in court.

$147 million in contingency fees was what he and other lawyers got out of it.

The computer manufacturer agreed to give cash rebates ranging from $210 to $443 to an estimated 1 million owners of its notebook computers bought since over ten years ago, and to make discount coupons available to an additional 3 million owners.

Laptop owners became the plaintiffs of this lawsuit filed last March.

Each man stated that there was a design flaw that threatened to cause corruption or loss of data when transferred to a floppy disk.

This laptop flaw which they claim they had in their laptops did not cause any damages or data loss at all.

The chip manufacturer stated that it had not once received any complaint from consumers regarding this alleged defect in the technology.

No complaints at all were made by the computer maker’s customers until last March when the lawsuit was filed.

Extensive laboratory tests run by the company showed no loss of data which can be attributed to the flaw.

Defeat in the jury trial would have meant a jeopardized financial future for the Japanese company. The company’s capitulation in this easily defensible case was what observers likened to throwing bloody meat into the Gulf of Mexico’s waters.

The sharks were there before the sound of the splash disappeared. Personal injury lawyers did the same thing, filing copycat lawsuits against five computer manufacturers who may have used the NEC floppy control chip.

These lawsuits are causing these businesses to consider layoffs. The problems have definitely gone bigger.

These billion dollar settlements may cause personal computer prices to go up, a New York financial analyst stated.

That would be doubly ironic because economists credit falling computer prices over the last two decades as one of the main factors in keeping inflation exceptionally low in the United States, a key ingredient in the nation’s nearly two decades of uninterrupted prosperity.

If you spare just a few hundred dollars, you can purchase low priced computers that work better than those that existed twenty years ago that cost thousands of dollars.

If the most avaricious elements of the plaintiffs bar manage to bully other laptop manufacturers into submission as they did this Japanese manufacturer, computer prices are likely to skyrocket.

Those cannot afford it will not consider this as good news.
