It was a busy Monday morning at a local speech and hearing clinic recently.

Examinations were conducted by speech clinicians and hearing technicians for twenty five children to see if there was any speech or hearing problems.

The screenings were extended to 537 children from different preschools and these were conducted by a junior league volunteer technician and a staff speech pathologist.

Recommendations were given to 61 children for hearing and 86 for speech reexaminations.

For the private preschool assessments, the results showed if the hearing and speech capabilities in the children were normal or if some needed to come back for more testing to be done.

If they can detect the onset of hearing and speech problems at an earlier stage, then it could help prevent more complicated hearing and speech problems later on, according to the director of the hearing and speech clinic.

As early as now they are already looking for signs of possible conditions that may affect the child later on in life, and this is why they conduct these checks, to see if there are probable conditions that could be alleviated to prevent the problem from worsening in time.

Considering the number of serious cases detected through the screening programs, the children have the time to get the care they need before growing older.

According to one volunteer, there were some parents who unnecessarily feared about a hearing or speech condition their children may have.

Much satisfaction was gained simply by being able to tell these parents that there is nothing to worry about.

From one volunteer to another, the techniques needed for hearing examinations were shared and this volunteer program resulted from it.

After a while, screenings were scheduled for each one of the nursery schools within their area that these two ladies managed to contact.

Hearing tests were provided to every single student and there were some who were further examined for their speech and language skills.

Those who did not pass the tests or who were absent that day were invited through correspondence with the parents to attend the clinic at a certain location for a re screening.

From how they react to sound stimuli, to their level of vocabulary and sentence structures, including their use of speech, each child was assessed based on the certain milestones that should have already been reached at their age level and the results determined what actions are necessary.

The evaluations resulted in a number of referrals and some suggestions for home management. It was recommended for still others that further evaluation and possibly treatment should be sought.

About two to three hours is the time necessary for the completion of the comprehensive assessment offered by the local speech and hearing clinic for children who may be susceptible to speech and hearing problems.

It is possible to consider some options for treatment after the receiving the results from the screenings and these are inclusive of a home program, weekly sessions done in groups or one by one, and a daily intensive preschool program.

It has been said that whatever happens a child at this young age will benefit tremendously because of the preventive and therapeutic nature of what is being done here.

They have six remaining preschool classes to screen and the date for the new batch of rescreening will also be set for the parents who may need to call to set up appointments.
