Coping With Spousal Abuse

Husband comes drunk and hits his wife. This must be a daily feature in the crime column of your Daily Newspaper. Some instances may well sound strange and one may wonder whether such gory incidents really happen or it is just a media gimmick. Well the sad fact is that spousal abuse does exist and many wives are being abused by their husbands each day. The sadder part is that these victims are helpless and are being tortured every day for no mistake of theirs.

Spousal abuse is mostly rampant in the lower rung societies that are poverty stricken. The poor are mostly uneducated and the males abuse their spouses whenever they get angry. Spousal abuse has become a vent through which frustrated husbands get rid of their frustration. Sometimes these husbands realize their mistake and refrain from spousal abuse. But there are many people who still think it is their right to abuse their wives.

Well no one gave any one the right to abuse their wives, and this is a crime that merits punishment from the court of law. As a human you have no right what so ever to abuse any one. There have been instances of spousal abuse even in educated and civilized societies. This is a part that many still fell hard to digest. The victims of spousal abuse need to know how to cope with it and they need to put a full stop to such repeated abuses.

Coping with this abuse may not be an easy task for the victim but the victims’ well-wishers must know how to help them. They have to first of all try and bring the husband and wife to a mutual understanding and try to make peace among them. If this isn’t possible, they might have to separate the couple for the time being and try to educate them in this regard.

Mostly a woman is abused for no fault of hers. There have also been instances where both, the wife and the husband are at fault. One needs to identify the culprit and try to find an amicable solution to the problem. Abuse is a delicate matter and needs to be dealt with carefully. One can take the couple for some counseling that is offered by NGOs and the Government. This counseling works 80% of the time.

The couple are counseled on the evil of spousal abuse and they are put through a series of mental tests and exercises by which they can change for the better. These councilors are experienced experts and they know exactly how to treat these people. The man needs more treatment than a woman. The woman needs to be consoled first and then the reason has to be known from her.

Once the couple have been counseled they will be allowed to live together without observation. This works most of the times. The major step in coping with spousal abuse is the development of self-confidence and determination. The woman also needs to ensure that there is no mistake from her side. Spousal abuse is also a crime under law, so please refrain from encouraging it and try to help the victims.
