Setup Home Office To Minimise Distractions

If you already work from home you probably have a dedicated space set up in which you work. But how good is it? Does it meet all your business needs? Do you struggle to keep focused on your work or do you always seem to be fighting against your surroundings?

If you are frustrated with the space you have – or you are just starting out and you want to get off on the right foot – it’s time to take a serious look at your office space. Even if you work out of the corner of a room used for another purpose, it is important to make the most of what you have.

For a start, do you have a suitable desk to work on? If you need to hide your workspace away when it is not in use, think about buying a computer armoire to hide everything neatly away. These are basically large units or pieces of furniture that look like wardrobes, but when you open the doors or roll up the shutters you will find a complete home office space.

They come in lots of different designs too so you can usually find one to blend in with the furniture that you already have. The big bonus of these is that you are less likely to be distracted by work when you aren’t working. And this is particularly important if you are working out of a room you also use for another purpose. If you have a dedicated office that you can shut the door on, it doesn’t matter about hiding things away because the idea is that you won’t be going in there during non-working hours anyway.

The next thing to think about is the need to be able to work with minimal distractions when you are using your workspace. To this end you need to be sure it is big enough and comfortable enough to use. Get yourself a proper office chair if you can, because you will find it far more comfortable to sit in.

You also need to be sure you won’t be distracted by the view from the window. Whatever kind of view you have you will find yourself looking out to see what is going on. Adding blinds or curtains is a good idea, as is the act of moving your desk away so you can’t be tempted to look out all the time. Do make sure your desk isn’t in too dark a place though. If you buy a computer armoire to use, make sure you can add lights to it if it doesn’t already have them. This will make it easier to see what you are doing without straining your eyes.

It certainly pays to think carefully about your working space at home, wherever it might be. You will after all be spending a lot of time in your home office so you need to be as comfortable as possible while focusing on whatever home based job you happen to do.
