The white wedding gown appeared about 2000 years ago, when the brides from the ancient Egypt wore more lines of drapery from simple materials. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries appeared one of the first documents that mention the white wedding gown of Anne of Brittany at her wedding with King Louis XII of France. Margaret Tudor, the daughter of Henry VII, married dressed in a white damask wedding gown hemmed with red-purple – the traditional color of royalty. In 1612 Princess Elizabeth, daughter of James I, wore a silver dress, embroidered with pearls, silver thread and precious stones.

Since the eighteenth century until the mid-nineteenth century, wedding gowns became much more rich and complicated. Brides who belonged to the royal houses chose expensive materials, preferred colors being silver with red. Victoria I of the United Kingdom wore, at her wedding in 1840, a white satin dress inwrought with orange flowers delicate lace, this dress being a model for future generations.

In the early twentieth century, wedding gowns were linked to the Victorian style of the white wedding gown with long sleeves, long veil from head to toe and a high collar that covers the entire neck.

Wedding gowns are characterized by two basic styles inherent in clothing in general – Classic and Romantic. The characteristic features of the Romantic style are the abundance of decorations, including drapery, embroidery, lace, flowers, etc. As a rule, wedding gowns belonging to the Romantic style are made of expensive, complex textures of colored fabric. Romantic style is also characterized by deep neckline and form-fitting styles. The severe cuts, the lack of superfluous decorations and brightly colored fabrics are the characteristic features of the Classic style. The color of the classic wedding gown is white.

There are different types of cuts for the wedding gowns: standard cut, which is characterized by a long line skirt; a dress with a corset, which visually reduces the waist, given the fact that the dress has two parts; or a clinging dress that smoothly passes into a wide dress.

One of the traditional styles of wedding gowns is the one with a fluffy skirt and a top that follows the line of the body.
