Setting Up A Home-Based Business Office
Transferring from a fully equipped office complete with IT people, latest copier, or what have you to a home office right next to your living room can be alienating. However, it has to be done because a home-based business can be rewarding both in monetary and personal gratification terms. And don’t think you can steal a little space in your kitchen or living room as your working space; your home-based business is bound to fail without a dedicated home office.
There are two main advantages in having a dedicated home-based business office: increase productivity and tax deduction. However, we’re going to save the discussion about these advantages for later and devote our time to discuss how to setup a home office.
When designing your home office, ask yourself what will you be doing in the space, what type of work needs to be done, how often are going to entertain clients in the office, etc. The answer to these questions should give you an idea about how much floor space and what office equipments you need. But regardless of the type of your home-based business, there are common home office equipments that you can’t do without in running a home-based business.
First, your office should be comfortable. And for this you need a comfortable desk and chair. Find a desk that’s wide enough to accommodate your computer monitor, one desk filer, telephone, and will leave enough elbow room for working – and an occasional child on the desk if you have little one. Your desk should be wide enough to accommodate these things because if you’re going to work in a home office, chances are you’re not going to have another desk for them. And more importantly, invest on a very good chair. It should be comfortable with arm rest and height adjustable with swivel. If you’re going to entertain clients in your office, you must have comfortable seats for them too.
The next fixture you can’t do without in your home-based business office is a filing cabinet or storage. Depending on your space you can either get a vertical or a lateral cabinet to store your important documents in. Whatever design you choose, be sure that it has locks to keep your documents safe especially if you have little children in the house. Young children and documents don’t mix.
And then there’s the all important office equipment that makes your life easier – they can even make or break your home-based business. These are your computer, printer, Internet, and telephone/fax machine. Again don’t be afraid to invest on the latest computer and software because they’re going to take the brunt of your work. You can’t make in your home-based business if you’re not connected to the Internet, so get the best connection possible. If you can get a phone with caller ID, that’s even better; be sure to have a fax machine, too.
The rest of your home-based business office furniture, fixture, and equipments should depend on your business type. Just bear in mind that these things are investments, so spend only on things that you really need.
