Triglycerides (MCT) Supplements
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are fats that contain 6, 8, 10, or 12 carbons. The number of carbons distinguishes them from long-chain (14 or more carbons) or short-chain (two or four carbons) fats. The length of the carbon chain affects the overall function in the body. MCTs are absorbed rapidly and burned for immediate energy, whereas other fats are absorbed and metabolized more slowly. Thus, most of the clinical evidence for MCTs added to the diet exists for the treatment of various fat mal absorption syndromes, but MCT supplements are typically sold to athletes as flavored or unflavored MCT oil with claims of improving endurance performance, promoting fat burning, sparing muscle glycogen, and maintaining or enhancing muscle mass.
It is theorized that because MCTs are rapidly absorbed and metabolized, the athlete who ingests them acquires a fuel source that helps to spare the use of muscle glycogen (stored carbohydrate). MCT supplements can be found at www.ShopPharmacyCounter.com and sold online without prescription. Because depletion of muscle glycogen is a factor in fatigue, ingestion of MCT oil could provide the body with an immediate source of fat that is rapidly broken down for energy; thus, muscle glycogen stores are not used up as quickly and the onset of fatigue is delayed.
MCTs are also thought to increase metabolic rate. Assuming that diet (calorie intake) and exercise (calorie output) remain the same, any increase in metabolic rate could result in a small, slow reduction in body fat. MCTs are thought to be burned immediately for energy rather than being stored as body fat and used for energy at a later time. In theory, MCTs could help to maintain muscle mass because they produce ketone bodies that are used for energy before amino acids drawn from muscle tissue are used for energy.
Although a handful of early studies seemed promising, the results of recent well-controlled studies on MCT supplements suggest that they are not effective in increasing endurance performance. In the absence of convincing scientific studies of bodybuilders or weight lifters, MCT supplements cannot be recommended as an effective supplement for reducing body fat or maintaining muscle mass. Likewise, the results of recent well-controlled studies in endurance athletes do not support the use of MCT oil to spare muscle glycogen or enhance performance. A notable exception are extreme endurance athletes, such as cyclists in multistage races (e.g., Tour de France) and participants in multiday “adventure race” events (e.g., the 7-day Eco-Challenge), who may have difficulty consuming enough calories and may find that 1 tablespoon of MCT oil provides approximately 110 easily absorbed calories to augment energy needs.
Because the length of the carbon chain affects absorption and MCTs are rapidly absorbed, they are transported directly to the liver. Numerous clinical trials have confirmed the high efficacy in the treatment of various types of impotence, increased libido and orgasmic sensations. In addition, the drug increases the production of pituitary follicle stimulating hormone, under the influence of which increased in the testes spermatogenesis (increase the volume of ejaculate, sperm concentration and motility) and increases fertility.
