A Day in the Wild

Men love going out and about. They love action and hate repetition. Another thing they like: is knowing stuff but still leaving room for more to learn. They love adventure and getting their hearts racing from adrenalin.

Women wonder why men, love sports so much. Like football. “Isn’t it the same game played by different people over the years”, my mother would ask when my dad and I would vegetate in front of the TV during the Super bowl. Yes, in a way the fundamentals of the game never change. Then one would say, “why then aren’t guys bored of the things that they know already?”

To retort take a sport like paint ball. Its fun, it can be played by all ages. It entails the whole psyche of the player. Athletic ability as well as great intellect is needed at the same time. In fact the marriage between brains and brawn makes the difference between a player and a super-player (for all sports, including golf!). The creeping and tension created by searching and eliminating other opponents is magical. The simulation of a war scenario is heavenly to the testosterone hormones. That moment when a player has an opponent in his cross-hairs and his finger on the trigger almost moves in slow motion as one’s senses are focused and intense. And the chase to get that coveted flag gets adrenalin flowing all day long.

So yes, men like knowing things, but love a little adventure too. They know all the rules and see all the plays as the players position themselves on a pitch, but nevertheless will die to see how the play is executed and its modifications by the individual players themselves. They have played with toy guns all their childhoods, that’s why they love paintball so much! Its something they know, but yet have to hone to make better. Who doesn’t know how to fire a gun anyway? Its a chance to get back to their childhood

So if you are a lady and want to plan something special for the men in your life why not plan a day out in the wild at a paintball arena, its much healthier than letting him lounge all day on the sofa watching football; which by the way, will give him the same pleasure! Here is a list of great things that you can plan for him:

Paintball – A war type simulation that is played in the woods or a paintball arena. Marking guns (i.e. were originally used to mark cattle in ranches are used.) This equipment may be hired. Make sure that he wears a helmet at any given time at the arena. Paintballs may move at speeds upwards of 1500 mph so a hit in the eye or mouth could cause a disaster.

Hiking – Its chance to get back in tune with nature. Relieve some stress in the outdoors, while seeing America! It should not cost that much as you can carry your own lunches and snacks. You may however be required to get a hiking lesson and in some areas be accompanied by a hiking guide. For those advanced, some hiking equipment may be required.

Golf – This is especially good those who do not feel that athletically endowed. Make sure to take him to a non-cart course. That way you are sure he will walk the whole course. (Imagine a small nine-hole course is at least 8000 feet!) That’s exercise, that’s fun and competition all wrapped into one. You can even get your own clubs and join him.

Tennis – This sport is really intense. It works out the major muscles and requires great mental agility and focus (just ask, Serena). It shouldn’t cost that much save for the initial cost of buying a racket and some shoes plus a few initial lessons.

Swimming – this is the world’s most intense and relaxing exercises. It not that competitive and there isn’t much play in it as water polo and other water sports aren’t widely known. It however is fun. It works all your muscles and helps to induce proper breathing technique. It is a great family quality time and really is cheap. Your municipality should have a few pools and winter swimming is just great.
