Is Menorca’s Son Bou the One For You?

Choosing a holiday destination is something that’s meant to be fun, but of course it’s no laughing matter. Get it wrong and you may not have quite the holiday you were hoping for. So, is Menorca’s Son Bou going to be somewhere you’ll enjoy spending your precious holiday time? We think so!

Where is it?

Menorca (sometimes referred to as ‘Minorca’) is one of the Balearic Islands off the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The group also includes the rather better known islands of Mallorca (Majorca) and Ibiza plus the less well-known Formentera/Formenterra. The original capital city was Ciudadela until the British decided to make Mahon the capital in the 18th century during the period of British rule. In Menorca, Son Bou is a resort on the southern coast of the island and is a relatively short drive from Mahon itself.

Who goes there?

The area is popular with holidaymakers that are seeking a slightly more relaxed and stress-free holiday. This typically includes families and slightly more mature people looking for a quieter resort. It is not a “disco on every corner” type location but there is enough to accommodate all members of the family.

What is the town like?

Menorca’s Son Bou beach stretches along a section of beach that is often stated as being the best on the island. Consisting of beautiful golden sand, it runs for around 3 kilometres. It is possible to walk from one side of the resort to the other but there is also usually a small mini-train that will help if you’re feeling the strain after a slightly indulgent lunch! The resort is largely separated from the beach by a range of protected sand dunes and reed marshes, which does give the beach a feeling of seclusion once you’re on it.

The accommodation in the resort consists of some hotels plus apartments and some luxury villas. In general, the resort is aimed at holidaymakers that are spending a little extra on their holidays to achieve more comfort and sophistication. There are a range of restaurants, bars, shops and some children’s attractions such as a waterslide

What about the beach?

As stated above, Menorca’s Son Bou resort has a lovely golden-sand beach that is insulated along most of its length from land-based building encroachment and which achieves a degree of privacy as a result. The marshes are well known for their bird life and you can bird-watch and swim in the sea all from your one beach location. The shallows have a largely sandy bottom and are typically well liked by children and those that are not strong swimmers although you must be aware of the current and watch for the warning flag.

What about nightlife?

For those seeking a riotous night time scene in Menorca, Son Bou probably wouldn’t be ideal.
There are some bars where music and dancing are available plus a disco in the very centre of town. On the whole though, this is calm and the evening life is generally fairly quiet with most entertainment being based around restaurant eating, strolling, cafes and some shows and related diversions in one or two larger hotels – you will hear some music from the centre around the resort.

Is there anything else to see?

Although there are some interesting archaeological sites in some nearby ancient caves at Torre d’en Gaumes (some of which are still occasionally occupied!) the resort itself does not have a very lengthy history. However, there are regular daily buses to and from Mahon and Cuidadela which are only a little further away. Both towns are well worth exploring – particularly on market days.

The nearby local village of Alaior has a weekly market and also specialises in its own locally made cheese. The highest point on the island is Monte Toro, which has a church on the top and although only rising to about 1200 feet, it does offer some truly spectacular views.

Making your decision

Hopefully the above has helped provide a picture of this lovely resort and location. Certainly on Menorca, Son Bou offers a quiet and relaxing charm and if that sounds like you then you will enjoy it a lot.
