Medical Treatments Can Help You Quit Smoking

We need medical assistance when we are not able to control our health or suppose we are trying to do something with our health, but not succeeding. Somebody who has taken a healthy decision to quit smoking, but not able to do it by own, can always go for some kind of therapy suggested by experts or doctors.

One medication therapy to consider is a nicotine replacement therapy. Cigarettes are replaced with other nicotine products like chewing gum containing nicotine, nicotine patch etc and the doses are decreased slowly over time. As an effect of this treatment the psychological dependence on nicotine goes down slowly and steadily.

There is also non-nicotine medication. This is when the replacement of cigarette is done by products without nicotine; these are basically called as “Anti-smoking” pills. Bupropion (Zyban) and Varenicline (Chantix) are two only available pills at present.

Zyban is known to help decrease smoking gradually and then stop permanently. It also works as anti-depressant. But Zyban has side effects like inadequate sleep, and even mouth drying.

Chantix or Champix is the latest one to help adults quit smoking. It prevents consumed nicotine to reach to the brain, thus eliminating the factor for addiction. If somebody continues smoking and takes chantix, slowly the addiction to Nicotine will disappear and he/she will quit smoking automatically. There will be no craving for smoking again. But again this also carries almost all the same side effects as Zyban.

So, doctor’s advice is very critical before taking these medicines.

Also there are a number of herbal and Ayurvedic medicines available in the markets that are also known to be very effective to help quit smoking.

You might want to consider hypnosis. This is a popular therapy with positive outcome. There are many Smoking Cessation Hypnotherapists available. They change your mental state to a relaxed one so that you can easily adopt whatever is suggested to you. At this state they try to decrease the addiction of nicotine by increasing negative feeling towards it and by increasing positive feeling for quitting smoking.

But the duration of the effect of this therapy may differ from person to person.

Some people can quit cold turkey. This is when somebody decides to quit smoking and the very next moment he/she quits, totally. There is no mental preparation before it. Also there is no support post-quitting, neither in form of any medicines nor by any psychotherapy. Sometimes it may seem to be stressful. The effect varied from person to person.

Acupuncture may be effective for some. It helps relax the body by releasing Endorphins. It is mainly done for coping up with the smoking withdrawal symptoms. Some people try behavioral therapy. This therapy is mainly for providing people with the skills of overcoming the bad habit. There are many health centers that provide Behavioral Therapy sessions.

Finally motivational therapy may be effective for you. It is probably the best one. There is nothing like self-motivation. There are several books, websites, and programs available that shows how quitting smoking will help you in positive way. One example may be calculating the money wasted by smoking versus the money can be saved after quitting smoking. This calculation really proved to be motivating to quit smoking.
