How Does Search Engine Optimization Algorithm Work?

According to the basic understanding of Search Engine Optimization, it is the procedure of designing a web site or web page in a way that it becomes compatible with search engines as a search result and is relevant for the visitors or readers as well. The design and content has to be optimized because the parameters that make a web page or web site friendly for search-engine and for viewers may be different. Therefore, an optimized solution has to be obtained for best results.

Now, let’s understand in a bit more detail how search engine optimization works and what are the key parameters related to it. Of course the basic criterion for determining the relevance of a given web page with respect to the keyword or set of keywords searched by a user on a search engine is the text used for the web page. But which portion of page are we talking about when we say that the search engines look for text. There are three key portions of texts that are most crucial for any search-engine algorithm.

Title Text: This is the text in the standard title tag of any web page. Just like a common viewer, even a search engine looks for the title text of any page at the first look. Therefore, the title text becomes the first criterion for any search-engine to determine the relevance of a web-page.

Body Text: This is the main content of the web page and the most substantial part of the process of determining the relevance of a given web-page with respect to a given set of key words. Different search engines may have different rules, algorithm, benchmarks and ranking criterion to determine the relevance and it’s order for any web-age. The relevance may not just be straightforward but can be based on very complex analysis. Apart from the common text based search-engines, a number of scientific and analytical search engines have been developed in recent past where such type of analysis and indirect determination of a web page’s relevance is performed.

Link Text: This is definitely the most ignored but equally important factor for an SEO algorithm. Unfortunately, many web content developers including a number of experts are either ignorant of this factor or often miss out on it when designing and building web content. Link text is basically the text that carries the link to the pages. The similarity or relevance of this text in the link to the web-page that it links to is a key factor in the algorithm. This is actually a challenge as this text is not really on the web page that is in question but is included in another linking web-page which may even be made by somebody else. Therefore, it may become very difficult to control that through what text the webpage is linked to.

Apart from the visible text, meta-tags that are generally hidden in some sections of the code of a web page also determine the relevance of a pages in a search engine. It is extremely important than an expert web designer or an SEO expert has complete knowledge about the use of meta-tags as well.
