Tip #1 – Ensure Your Dog Has the Right Vaccinations

First, if you are going to travel with your dog, you need to ensure that your dog has the right vaccinations. Before going on the trip, take him to the vet to make sure all the vaccinations are up to date. There are some places where you may have to show the vaccinations that your dog has had. It is especially important to make sure your dog is up to date on the rabies vaccination, since that is required all through the United States.

Tip #2 – Put a Collar on Your Dog Along with ID Tags

Another important tip is to put a collar on your dog along with ID tags when you are traveling. Tags should be worn when you travel, even if your dog happens to have a microchip in him. If your dog accidentally was lost, people may not look for the microchip but they would be able to see the tags on your dog. It’s a good idea to have your name and contact information and perhaps even your veterinarians contact information as well so you are sure you can get contacted.

Tip #3 – Bring Along Some Water

Always bring along some water from home or go with bottled water when you are traveling. When dogs travel, often they deal with an upset stomach and drinking water that they are not used to can upset their stomach and even cause diarrhea to occur. You’ll keep your dog feeling his best if you bring along the water that he is used to.

Tip #4 – Take the Dog’s Regular Food

You should also take along the dog’s regular food so he eats the same food while you are traveling together. You’ll want to continue feeding your dog the food that he is used to so you avoid any stomach problems. Some foods are difficult to find anyway, so plan to take your dog’s regular food with you.

Tip #5 – Crate the Dog

While you may think it is a bit harsh, you should crate your dog when you are traveling, no matter what type of vehicle you have. It is not safe for your dog to ride along lose in the car. The crate is a lot safer. This way if you end up having an accident, your dog will be protected and won’t go flying through the windshield. Ensure that the crate is the right size for your dog. It should not cramp your dog, but it can’t be too big either or your dog will end up being jarred around within the crate.
