Shopping and Sightseeing – New York’s Favourite Pastimes

When it comes to sightseeing, New York’s ‘Big Apple’ should be very high up on your list. With phenomenal sights such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, and the beauty of Central Park, there is plenty to keep you entertained. However, no trip to New York would be complete without a bit of shopping. So while you’re in the big city, make sure you see the big shops!

Macy’s

Macy’s, known as one of the biggest and best department stores in the world, should be the first port of call if you’re combining a spot of shopping with your sightseeing. New York has two Macy’s stores, both of which will make you want to walk out with full shopping bags and an empty purse. Complete with a cloakroom where you can check your coats and an enormous variety of places to eat, Macy’s is somewhere you can expect to stay a long time. The flagship store in Herald Square is renowned for its holiday celebrations, in particular its thanksgiving parades, window displays and Christmas grottos. And bear in mind, if you’re an international shopper you can get your hands on a discount card that will get you an 11% discount on most purchases made within the visitor’s center.

Bloomingdales

Another upscale and luxury shopping center to take refuge in when you get tired of sightseeing, New York’s finest answer to shopping, Bloomingdales, is an experience not to be missed. With just about every department you could dream of, this department store is likely to blow a great deal of your holiday budget if you spend too much time in there. However, there are definite perks to shopping at Bloomingdales. From the free gift you get when you spend over $50 in the visitors centre, to the personal shoppers, translation services, and shipping to your home that are available, this makes for a shopping experience like no other.

Barneys

For luxury on an ever so slightly smaller scale, head to Barneys. If you’re combining sightseeing New York with a little bit of bridal shopping, this is definitely the place to go. With exclusive designs on almost all things wedding that you can think of, as well as make up artists who can help you decide what look you’d like to go for, you could plan your entire big day in Barneys. Not to mention placing your wedding list; though your guests back home may not thank you for that. If there are no approaching weddings, worry not. There is still plenty to see, do and shop for in Barneys and you will undoubtedly enjoy one of the chic-est shopping trips of your stay in New York.

So, if you’re on holiday in New York, why not really make the most of your visit and partake in the two pastimes that people from the Big Apple love the most – shopping and sightseeing. New York will be etched into your memory forever thanks to all the souvenirs you simply won’t be able to leave behind, and even more so as your new purchases are bound to feature in plenty of your holiday snaps!
