Music Promotion For Successful Bands

Music promotion can be very expensive if your goal is to sign a record deal with one of the big record labels. Unfortunately if you are not careful you can waste your time and money. But you can leave the ranks of unsigned bands and propel your music career if you will cover the basics of band promotion.

If you can get real clear on the answers to some important questions about your band you will set your band and music apart from all the other unsigned artists trying to sign a record deal. So, get all the people involved with your music promotion together and ask these questions:

First, how is our band and music unique from others in the same genre? Even things like all the members having the same hair color or being from the same city. Something that seems insignificant to you may become very important in branding your band.

Speaking of branding, it is critical to the success of your band. You have to have a brand and I do not mean a blah brand. It has to sizzle. You might have the best voices and instrumentalists in the world but without good branding you will remain in the ranks of unsigned bands.

Second, does our band gel? I do not mean your hair. How are the dynamics of your group’s members. If you are lacking good chemistry getting signed will be extremely difficult. There has to be harmony in your music and between each other.

This may involve bringing in an outsider who will provide an honest opinion. I know it would be very difficult to tell someone that they are preventing your group from really moving forward. But your music promotion depends on this level of honesty if you want to sign the big deal.

Third, do we have a fan base? Unknowns remain unsigned bands. It is that simple. Record labels are not going to be willing to sign you without a fan base. You may feel like this is just too daunting of a task. It was in the past but the internet has changed this.

Online music promotion can quickly build you a fan base from around the world. Too many groups do not take advantage of this or go about incorrectly. Myspace music promotion alone could build you a very respectable fan base in a very short time. But you must know how to do it effectively.

Fourth, how do we look? Sure it is ultimately about your sound but you must have the right look that complements your music promotion. Record labels do not just listen to music they look at bands closely for their marketability.
