Wedding Cake Motifs by Season

Need some ideas for your wedding cake? Why not choose a design which ties in with the time of year? These are some wonderful motifs for wedding cakes for every season. One of them is sure to be perfect for you.

Spring: What a lovely time of year! With the birds singing, the gardens blooming, and the butterflies returning, it could easily be the prettiest season of all. There are some wonderful cake motifs to tie in with the gentle beauty of spring. Seasonal flowers are always a great decoration. Whether they are real or handmade from sugar, cascades of pink peonies or cherry blossoms, lilacs (definitely use a sugar version for this quick-to-wilt variety), tulips, or lily of the valley all say “spring”. If you want to add a touch of whimsy to your cake, a cute garden theme complete with lucky ladybugs would be adorable. Dozens of multi-colored butterflies are another beautiful motif for a spring wedding cake.

Summer: Brightly colored flowers look great for summer wedding cakes, especially big round ones. Play up the beachy side of the season with a cake decorated in seashells. They can be real shells (make sure they are very clean!) or make from fondant lightly coated in an iridescent powder. Summer fruits are another good theme for a cake. Fresh strawberries or raspberries are colorful and so delicious or use marzipan reproductions to decorate a cake with a fresh berry filling. Green leaves and white blossoms are the perfect romantic accent to the decorative berries. Pearl bridal jewelry is a summer classic, and there are some equally classic cakes for June brides which mimic the gracious beauty of pearl bridal jewelry. White chocolate “pearls” are lovely strung around the base of each tier of a pale pink cake or use tiny edible pearls to decorate a Swiss dot cake topped with yellow roses.

Fall: Leaves are the favorite theme of autumn, and there are lots of ways to use them to decorate a wedding cake. For a crafty look, design a folk art-inspired “tree of life” to climb up the side of the cake. Maple flavored sugar leaves would be pretty and tasty scattered over a fondant cake. Or play up the woodsy side of the season with clusters of sugar paste acorns, leaves, and ferns in soft mossy colors on each tier of the confection. Another great idea for a fall wedding is a shorter cake with wide tiers. Decorate the top layer with a cornucopia overflowing with marzipan fruits and vegetables. The “horn of plenty” symbolizes the fall harvest and also abundance, which makes it a very nice motif for an autumn wedding. And don’t overlook the idea of a chocolate cake for your autumn nuptials!

Winter: Play up a Winter Wonderland wedding with a white fondant cake decorated with silver and ice blue piped snowflakes. Or celebrate the natural side of the season with frosted pinecones (you can use real ones, just don’t eat them!), white roses, and red sugar berries. For an elegant winter wedding, edible silver beads can be used to make an intricate and sparkly pattern around each tier of the confection. Another fun idea is to cover a cake in large white chocolate “snowballs”. Add a little bride and groom snowman set to the top and you will be all set for your winter wedding.
