Medical Assistant training can be accessed anywhere these days, online or at a school campus. There are even instances of Employers training their own Medical Assistants. The availability of Medical Assistant jobs as increased phenomenally recently and as such places that offer training have also expanded. As a medical assistant, one can work in a hospital, health center or in a home for the elderly or in somebody’s private home. Accessing training is easy as the only prerequisite is a high school GED. For Medical Assistant Jobs you can hold a certificate, a diploma or an associate degree. A certificate or diploma takes around a year sometimes a shorter period depending on how the school structures the course. Most jobs only require a certificate though but if one has higher qualifications they will be the preferred candidate. Medical Assistant training can be done at a Junior or Community College or at postsecondary vocational schools as well as vocational high schools. What is offered is dependent on the school but the course requirements are similar.

There are some medical assistants that only perform clerical duties whereas there are those that perform clinical duties such as assisting with medical exams and collecting and analyzing pertinent medical data. After finishing the coursework you will be in most instances required to work as an intern to gain experience in this field. After completing your certificate, diploma or degree you can be required or not to pass the Certification/Re-certification Exam as set by the American Association of Medical Assistants. Even if you are not required to do this it is advised that you do as this imparts a lot of benefits to you and says that you are a professional. Benefits include earning potential and employment growth. There is a fee required though so if you do not need it right away you can start working and then take the exam. In a report released in 2009 the average salary for a medical assistant with less than one year of experience is approximately $27,000 however the annual average differs from state to state with New Jersey topping the charts at $35,990.

The courses are short and take anywhere from a little less than a year to two years depending on the type of qualification you will receive upon finishing the program requirements.
