White Water Rafting – A Different Kind Of Vacation

If you have been wondering what to do on your next vacation, then one option you should consider is to go on a white water rafting trip. Perhaps most of your other vacations were to the standard tourist destinations that everyone visits and you have been looking for something a bit more exciting. A white water rafting trip can offer you an adventure of a lifetime. You will never be able to forget it and you will want to go back again and again. When my friends come home from a trip to the in-laws or Disney World I always end up shaking my head and wondering, “why the same old thing over and over”? You are only here for a short time why not add a little adventure and have some fun? Here are a few tips to help make your rafting trip successful.

When to Go – In many areas to the north and out west one of the best times to go white water rafting is in June. River rapids are usually caused from the melting snow high in the mountains. So In or around June the water runoff is usually at its absolute peak. In North Georgia we don’t get a lot of snow but we do get plenty of rainfall. This means the water will be running high and fast almost any time of year. It’s a lot more comfortable when it’s not cold though and some places are closed in the winter anyway. I recommend May through September for this area.

Singles or Doubles – A choice that some couples struggle with is whether to share a larger raft or to each get their own separate raft. If both of you are competitive and have independent personalities then you might have more fun if you have separate rafts. Since the white water rapids are usually interspersed with calm stretches of water, you can always tie your rafts together as you coast lazily down the river. If you aren’t out to beat each other then I think it’s great to share a raft so you can share the steering and paddling. Of course having two rafts is always nice if one raft gets punctured, rare, but it can happen.

When to Take Breaks – It can get tiring to constantly have to steer or paddle your raft so it is a good idea to take a break every couple of hours. This is especially true if you expect your trip to last for more than one day. Although you may feel like you are bursting with energy at the beginning, you may find yourself exhausted and miserable by the end of your trip. The key is to pace yourself.

White water rafting is definitely one of the best and most enjoyable vacations you could ever take. Rafts are often in short supply during the spring and summer months so make sure that you reserve yours as early as possible. Don’t give in to the same old boring vacation, get yourself some real adventure.
