How to Setup a “Woodsball” Field

The best thing about woodsball is that you can set it up nearly anywhere on just about any terrain and the field can adapt to whatever type of game you want to play. Whether it’s Elimination, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, or Iron Man you’re good to go. There are a few things that you will want to keep in mind while playing woodsball so be sure to take notes. Wherever you play always remember your safety rules and be sure to bring along some water, snacks, and first aid equipment.

The first and most basic rule is to choose a location that is easy to get to and far enough away from houses, cars and busy roads. Be sure that there is natural cover and your location is big enough to accommodate the number of players in your group. The field should be large enough that you are out of range of the opposing players and not so large that you can’t hear each other when communicating.

You want to make sure and mark off the boundaries to your field using any natural features and landmarks that are available. Plastic tape can be used if necessary so be sure to bring some along. You’ll want the bases to be set up at opposite ends of the field. And you may want to mark off any unsafe areas. Be sure to set up a safe area for those who are eliminated. The size of the field isn’t that important as long as it is large enough to accommodate the number of players in your game.

You may want to set up some bunkers by stacking rocks, tree branches, or any other natural things available at your location. You could also bring some of your own manmade bunkers to place on the field if you would like. Bunkers whether natural or manmade provide an excellent sources of cover and concealment. Always disassemble any natural bunkers that you’ve built before leaving the field. Just remember, camouflage is of importance for woodsball; players need to blend in to the surrounding environment, making it harder for the opposing team to spot the player. Players can also take advantage of “ghillie” suits, allowing them to remain undetected at close ranges.

There are any number of places where you can set up a game of woodsball. Be sure to make use of all the natural terrain, rocky out-croppings, and elevations in the area where you set up your field of play. If you go to private property be sure to ask permission first. When you set up a safe area for eliminated players make sure that it is far enough away that they can safely remove their goggles.

So to recap choose a good location that is close enough and easy to get to. Away from populated areas so you don’t hit any innocent bystanders. Set up you boundaries using any available natural landmarks or tape if necessary. Be sure to mark off a dead zone for those eliminated during play. And as always be safe and keep your weapon pointed downrange.
