Smallest Computer: The Shining Ideas of Shrinking Technology

The first calculator of the world was first designed in and around 2400 BC in the kingdom of Babylonia. Known as Abacus, the first human calculator emerged on the computing platform developed by Panini and Pingala. The modern computing system was their brainchild and on their model, the whole computing theory worked still now. Much later, the turning machine came into being, it was invented by an English Mathematician and Logician Alan Turing and this invention was recognized as an important step towards a new computing methodology with a machine called COMPUTERS. After him, the computer finally appeared from the mother’s womb and this time it was the Father of Computer himself, Charles Babbage. The pioneer of first mechanical computers gifted us the first generation computers in the 19th century and it was the foundation of all modern computers. Later, in 1937 John Atanasoff designed the first digital computers.

In the initial years of the development of the computer, all electronic computers were large, extremely large, like that of a large room and consume huge power. Later these monstrous computers were downsized to Desktops. The desktop version of the computer became popular. Much later then there was Desktops’ smaller versions, Laptops. We also didn’t mind when laptops were too downsized to Palmtops and now Slates. The world communication gap is shrinking and its communicative mediums as well!

The computers also lie in between the multi-user computer system and in single-user computers and they are primarily known as minicomputers. The term “mini” indicates about the miniature kind of computers but it cannot be considered as the smallest designed computers or computers with microprocessor and CPU with a limited amount of disk space. Therefore, the term “micro” is a small size and microcomputers that cannot be considered as the smallest one in the world. Therefore, you are cramped with space and cannot even afford a laptop, and so you want minicomputers, then which smallest breed of computers you will choose?

The evolution of computers continued and there was a sharp rise in creation and in sell of laptops. It was step further towards the design of small sized computers. And the smallest one? It’s yet to create! However, as we mentioned that palmtops are the next generation of smallest computers sidelining laptops. Before such creation of palmtops, people never imagined that how computers can fit into a palm. However, palmtops were created and the next generation computers are here!

When it is about reminding the smallest PCs, recently there is introduction of the tablet PCs. The new forms of tablets recently launched by AppleiMac known as iSlate, is one of the hottest products in the market right now. However, behind the success story of the slate computers, there is a project called Project Origami. Computer giants like Microsoft and Intel are also working on new tablet computers and trying to build it with new accessories like computer subwoofer. Otherwise, they are maintaining the same specifications about the tablet and an 8 inch small sensitive touch screen with touch pack interface allowing the use of stylus. It runs on Windows XP and are able to run any software which are compatible in Windows platform. Well supported with audio, video and computer games and offers great internet connectivity and networking.

Tablet computers like iSlate are just the first step towards shrinking the world within our palm and with more technology, one day, we will get the smallest computers of all and then the world would be too small for us!
