Paintball can be a dangerous sport. Well, the marker (paintball gun) can be dangerous. Well, people can be dangerous with paintball guns, real guns, knives or even a baseball. The point is that there are many things that could be considered dangerous. You can probably think of a few right now. A baseball could be dangerous if you threw it at someone and they weren’t expecting it and you caught them in the face. A paintball marker is the same way. They can be dangerous it you don’t use your safety precautions. That’s where your paintball gun sock or plug comes in.

These are a couple of pieces of equipment that are designed to help you be safe with your paintball gun. A barrel sock is designed to catch a paintball in the event that your paintball gun was fired accidentally. Of course it helps to have your sock on your marker in order to catch a paintball. The main reason you need a paintball sock or a plug is for those times where you are not on the field and people around you have removed their masks. The most dangerous place that you could shoot someone is in the face. Someone could loose an eye if they got shoot in the eye. Have you ever heard the phrase “it’s all fun and games until someone gets shot in the eye”? It really happens more often than you think and that’s why we have to constantly remind each other to put a sock on it.

Safety in any sport is a necessity. Why do you think that professional football players have pads and a helmet? Ever notice baseball players going up to bat without a helmet? If you ask any Marine about weapon safety, any Marine, they will tell you to assume that the weapon is loaded at all times. They will tell you to keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and to keep the safety on. If they see you walking around with a magazine in your weapon they will tell you to stop and remove the magazine and clear your weapon right now. They don’t play around with weapon safety and neither should you.

A paintball gun plug is a simple device and much like the sock is a necessity when going to an organized paintball field. A plug fits into the working end of your paintball gun and keeps paintballs from being fired accidentally. You have to have either a paintball gun sock or a paintball gun plug attached to your marker when checking in for your game of paintball. If you are not in the field you are required to have your sock or plug attached to your weapon. And even when getting on the field you must have your marker plugged or socked until just seconds before your game starts.

Always make sure that your paintball marker is safe and that you are safe with your weapon. When you are not on the field make sure that you have either your paintball gun sock or plug installed properly on your weapon. And if you see anyone else who is not being safe you have a responsibility to remind him to make his weapon safe. As always keep your weapon pointed down range and keep both eyes in your head.
