At this point you should be starting with a clean slate. Install the new mounting hardware that was provided with you fixture. Follow the manufactures guidelines. When installing the new mounting hardware make sure not the pinch the electrical wiring or scrape the protective coating.

Now take the new base of the light and attach the wires black to black, white to white and green to green it could also be green to bare copper. Make sure to use new wire nuts to prevent electrical shorts. Take you lineman pliers and twist the wire nuts on securely. You want to make sure all your wires have a good secure contact.

Gently tuck the wires into the electrical box making sure not to damage any protective coatings on the wire. Slide the mounting screws through the slots on the lighting fixture and twist. So that the screw head is over the smaller slot in the base. Now tighten the screws so the fixture is secure and can not move.
