Summer has finally reached us here in the UK, but before you rush off to your local car dealer in search for the perfect convertible, you should consider how to drive safely during these warm months of the year. Summer driving should be treated in the same way as winter driving; there are many pitfalls and perils that you should be aware of and be prepared for when you’re about to embark upon both long and short journeys.

One of the first things that you need to look out for once the weather becomes balmy is holidaymakers. Whether you live in an area that people flock to or away from, the driving standards can be dire. Keep your wits about you for motorists that clearly do not know the roads well. Be patient and careful when negotiating bits of road that you know to be slightly unusual or dangerous, as this is where accidents can really happen. No matter how awful the driving is by other motorists, resist the urge to give in to even the mildest of road rage as it can really put you at risk.

Another summer issue that you are unlikely to even consider whilst browsing the car dealership for a new ride is the rise in wildlife on the roads at this time of year. Make sure that your headlights are in full working order and that you are able to have good visibility at all times. Baby animals especially can be unaware of the dangers of the road and can often just appear without warning, making it dangerous for you, the driver. Be extra aware and careful around dawn and dusk. Keep in mind that this also applies to children too. The school holidays mean that a lot more children are playing outside during the day and into the evenings as it stays lighter for longer.

If hay fever is an issue for you then beware of driving long distances while you are suffering. If you are travelling at 70mph and you sneeze then you are driving blind for approximately 100 metres. Ensure that any remedies taken for hay fever are the non-drowsy type and try to keep windows shut around greener areas. Sunglasses can help to block out sneeze-inducing sunlight and also help you with glare issues, but make sure that they are designed so that they don’t impair your peripheral vision.

Lastly, fluid levels are also an important thing to keep in check while it’s warm. Make sure that your windscreen wash is always topped up, as sun glare on bugs and dust can really block your vision more than you may realise. Double check that your radiator is well supplied with water and that your engine coolant is always at maximum. An overheated car would really spoil your day and can be dangerous, especially in heavy traffic where there may not be any suitable places to stop. No one enjoys a trip to the local car dealer if it’s out of necessity due to a written off vehicle.
