Metal detecting may be an obscure hobby but it is a truly exciting one to take on. However, if you are just getting the hang of the whole process, then why not hit the beach for your first expedition. The vast stretch of sandy shores is ideal for treasure hunts. You can find an array of hidden treasures, both valuable and worthless.

What you first need to understand, however, is that metal detecting is a entirely legitimate activity and if you have plans with socialising and building networks with fellow hobbyists, then you should be familiar with the lingo first. Before you delve into this very interesting world of metal detecting, here are some helpful terminologies that can be useful:

-Coin Line: A coin line, as the name implies is a line of coins. Usually found in the wet, it follows the law of physics and rules of trajectory. So if you see a coin line in the beach, follow its trail because it will most likely lead you to more coins or better yet, bigger treasures.

-Sticky Spot: This is an amusement park for metal detecting fanatics because you can find many different things in this place. Sticky spots are areas on the beach that defies all logic because the only thing you can assume for this is that someone or something from the skies dropped these items directly onto the beach. They do not appear to form a line and they do not lead to a trail. They vary sizes and they form no specific shape, but when there is a sticky spot, you will surely find many cool things.

-The Dry: Obviously, it is an area in the beach that does not touch water; perhaps for a long period or for eternity. It is a great place to find many different things however, it is also a great area to collect lots of useless garbage.

-The Towel Line: The towel line is the area in the beach where visitors lay their towels out to be able to lounge and bake under the sun. This area can be partly wet or dry and despite the hindrance of people, you should not be discouraged and overlook this area because if both the dry and wet are devoid of any treasure, this is your last hope.

-The Water Line: As the name suggests it is a specific area in the beach where the water meets the sand. This is a good place to visit during low tide but while it is still high tide, you can just take a few steps to the wet and begin your search there.

-The Wet: The opposite area of the dry; this is the specific area of wet sand that is exposed during a low tide and underwater during the high tide. This is usually most productive area in the beach where you can find gold and certain treasures. You will have to be little careful, though, because most metal detectors do not work properly here because of the salt content in the water. Nevertheless, do overlook this place because you might miss something truly spectacular.
