Text messaging is a reference to the exchange of brief written messages between mobile and portable devices covered in cellular networks. Short Message Service (SMS), another term for it, can now include messages with images, videos and sound content.

In the United States, it is primarily referred to as texting while in the United Kingdom and most of Europe it is called SMS. In many other parts of the world like the Middle East, Asia and Australia, it is called TMS.

The most common use of this technological advancement is for communication between two people. However, today, many automated systems can be communicated with to interact, order products and services, participate in contests

and much more.

In countries like Finland, Sweden and Norway, even 85% of their populations use SMS. The European average is approximately 80% and North America is catching up with over 60% by the end of 2008.

Texting is known to have some addictive qualities according to a survey by Nokia conducted in 2002. There is a need to be connected to the world and your community.

However, there are many advantages to SMS. People can text and respond on their own time tables and without speaking out loud.

For example, if I am in a meeting and have received a message, I can simply glance down for a brief moment and receive possibly pertinent information without receiving a phone call. Also, if I cannot respond to something, I can wait until it is the most convenient time to text them back.

Also, the information is saved in your phone. Often times, a good way of giving directions is through SMS rather than a telephone call.

Like in the game of telephone information can be misheard or remembered inaccurately. If important information like a code, an address or directions are sent through a text message, they are instantly stored on someone’s phone without that person even having to grab a pen and paper.

Additionally, texting is often cheaper than placing a phone call and faster. Depending on the cellular plan, it may be more convenient as well as cost effective.

At an average cost of $0.10 per message, an excess revenue of $50 billion is generated for mobile telephone operators, according to the 500 billion SMS messages that were recorded as sent in 2004. That is nearly 100 posts for every person in the world.

Now, SMS Marketing is a service used for businesses to advertise by distributing bulk communications to promote coupons, events, contests and much more. This is a common way for clubs, associations and advertisers to quickly and affordably reach a group of willing subscribers.

Thus far, this form of advertising has proven to be very effective, but some worry that it will soon be abused and become like spam. However, it cannot be ignored with the current growth and popularity that are present in the market.

There have also been many uses that involve other forms of media like TV shows, Movie screens, and other advertising campaigns. For example, often a display will come up before a movie and have a quiz question and a phone number to text an answer to.
