Learning How to Maintain Your Windows

After the long winter season, once the ice has melted and sun has begun to shine brightly again, the best things to do are to open your windows wide and let the air in. This will be truly satisfying especially after the long time of being inside closed doors. Unfortunately, however much you wish for the new sun to get into your house, it will be impossible because your windows would not open properly. To remedy this, you need to learn how to properly maintain your windows.

Proper window maintenance

Once you know what to do, this process is absolutely simple to master. You will first have to formulate a routine to clean the frames and sills, as well as the tracks and all else will fall into place. This is best done in the summer, when the weather is nice and you should make a habit of doing this more regularly because windows that do not open and close properly attract all sorts of bugs, nest and dirt. If you leave this condition for very long, in the end your windows will not function properly anymore. So before this happens, make sure to clean them properly:

a. Wash off fingerprints and any form of smudges on the glass and frames with any store-bought window cleaner. Use a smooth rag and for best results and try wiping the glass with old newspaper. This method may sound absurd but try it to see for yourself.
b. Scrape the entire window surface and frames of all the dirt
c. Vacuum them at the creaks and cracks if necessary.
d. Wash the tracks on the sliding windows with appropriate spray cleaner without getting much moisture on the frames.
e. Make sure to dry them completely using a thin rag or a paper towel because leaving them wet will lead to resting, especially in the hinge areas.

Cleaning your windows on a regular basis is eventually for your own benefit. However, you should have a regular maintenance routine to observe throughout the year. It will save you a lot of money on window repairs and replacement, and make sure that your windows will work all year round.

– Make sure to lubricate all the moving part of your windows (tracks, crank mechanisms, metal brackets and slides) with Teflon or Silicone spray. Do be careful when you use the silicone type, however, because it has the tendency to make the windows appear yellow and never use petroleum-based products such as WD-40 because they leave a gummy mess that looks even worst.
– Maintain the color of your window frames by applying a small amount of car wax. Metal frames have the tendency to oxidize because of the heat so do this to restore the luster and shine to your windows.
– Moisture can either be defective or not. If the moisture is on the inside, you do not have to worry because it is just an indication that your house is too humid inside. However, if the moisture is on the outside, this cloudiness would indicate that a seal on the window has been broken and so the air and the moisture and allowed to seap in between the glass.
– Double-hung windows have the tendency to malfunction. To keep this from happening, you can by compression springs for your windows to keep them in place.

Lastly, when washing your windows, try not to do it in direct sunlight because they somehow tend to streak. You can use a squeegee extension pole to reach hard to reach areas and try not to drip solution on to the woodwork because it can damage the finish.
