There are a lot of responsibilities that come along with the decision to have a baby. Having a baby means we will have to devote time and effort in raising a child. It is not a responsibility that we can pass on to other people if we get tired. Aside from this, we also have the responsibility to ensure that our child grows and develops properly – we need to ensure that the child is properly nourished and is always healthy. We also have to make sure that we are able to teach the child everything that it needs to know about life.

Apart from these, we also have the responsibility to decide for our children during the period of time when they are still too young to protect themselves, to differentiate right from wrong, and to determine what things are right for them. This is a pretty tough responsibility because our decision will determine what will happen to our child in the future. One tough call that parents need to make if they have a male child is pertaining to circumcision.

On a medical point of view, circumcision is the act of removing the foreskin of the penis through a surgical procedure. Some cultures consider circumcision as part of a religious tradition. Some people, on the other hand, consider circumcision because of the personal hygiene benefits that it can provide. Some groups, however, believe that this procedure is unnecessary and may just pose a threat to the child, especially if the procedure is done during infancy. In order to help us decide, here are a few advantages and disadvantages that our child can have from being circumcised.

Pros:

Many medical practitioners believe that circumcision makes the penis easier to clean, thus allowing our child to maintain personal hygiene better. Studies also show that men who are not circumcised may be more prone to urinary nerve tract infection and penile cancer. Urinary nerve tract infection may pose serious threats to the kidneys later on and reducing the risks of having this infection also helps us protect our kidney in the future. Some also believe that there is lesser possibility of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases due to circumcision.

Cons:

Those who do not agree with having a male child circumcised believe that the operation poses a threat to the child’s life. After the operation, the wound may be infected and may endanger the life of the child. If performed inaccurately, bleeding may occur and this could also threaten the child’s life. In addition, some believes that circumcision would lessen someone’s ability to enjoy sexual pleasure in the future because there are a lot of nerves that are located on the foreskin that will be removed.

Circumcision is a medical procedure that is not required nor prohibited. It is entirely up to the parents to decide whether their child needs to undergo this procedure or not. Whatever the decision may be, it is important to consider all the advantages and disadvantages and to determine what would be the best or your child.
