Augusta is one of the most exciting and beautiful cities of Georgia, United States. This city is like a garden city in true sense as it offers a range of gardens scattered throughout the city. It is also referred as the Augusta-Richmond County. It is considered as one of the principle cities of the Augusta-Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area.
This city is one of the largest cities and ranked second in the state of Georgia. This city also enjoys the status of being the second largest metro area in the state after Atlanta. It is best known as the venue of The Masters golf tournament that takes place every year.
The city of Augusta is located right in the east central section of the state which is just 150 miles of Atlanta. It exhibits a very rich and remarkable history which will take you to the seventeenth century. The first settlement of the area was established in the year 1736 by British General named James Oglethorpe.
During the period of cotton boom, the city became the second largest inland cotton market in the world. This was due to the construction of the Augusta Canal. It was the state capital of Georgia from 1785 and 1795 and during this period it witnessed the construction of some of the most historically significant homes and buildings.
It is home to some of the most significant structures such as the Springfield Baptist Church which is the oldest Afro-American church, the boyhood home of Woodrow Wilson and Ezekiel Harris House.
This city has been consolidated with Richmond county giving rise to Augusta-Richmond County. This is governed by a Mayor along with 10 county commissioners. It is one of the three consolidated governments in the state of Georgia.
The major tourist attraction of the city is the Masters Golf Tournaments which takes place every year in the month of April. This is one of the most prestigious and world renowned golf tournaments that drawing several tourists from all round the globe.
One would also find a range of thrilling and adventurous aquatic activities such as kayaking, cycling and fishing around the area of Augusta Canal. It also exhibits attractions that range from the Fort Discovery Interactive Science Center to Botanical Gardens.
Augusta Canal is the only National Heritage Area and the only industrial power canal. This is the only source of water that provides drinking water for entire city of Augusta. One can enjoy some thrilling activities such as the kayaking or bicycling in the water of the canal.
One would also not afford to miss the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame and Botanical Gardens which was established in the year 1982. This garden is dedicated for preserving the glorious history of the people who contributed to golf. The garden exhibits a lush garden of 8 acres with bronze statues of some of greatest legends of golf.
It is not a daunting task to find a suitable accommodation during the stay at Augusta. But it will become a bit difficult to find a hotel if you are arriving in the city during major events such as Masters golfing tournament. The hotels range from luxury to mid-budget and budget hotels.Most of the discounted hotels are situated around the area of Washington Road which is just 10 km from the downtown area.
