15 Do’s and Don’ts of Glassware

Everyone has their own collection of glassware and cutlery to serve their favourite drinks and cuisine on. There are some people who also have a fetish of collecting different types of glassware to decorate their kitchen and dining hall.

However, just collecting them is not enough. Glassware has to be taken care of to maintain its shine and charm for long. So here is a rundown of the do’s and don’ts for the proper handling and care of delicate glassware.

1.The more delicate the glassware is, the more care it requires. So if you have antiques and delicate glassware wash them carefully.

2.If they fit in the dishwasher or plastic bowl, wash your glassware carefully but not harshly. Harsh washing of glassware removes its lust and grace.

3.It is better to use baking soda instead of detergent, with warm water to wash gentle glassware. This prevents any insinuation of leftover detergent in the glassware that will hinder the bubbling of drinks like wine and champagne.

4.It is better to use warm water to wash your glassware as it helps remove any greasy and sticky particles found on them.

5.It is advised to use kid gloves to handle glassware after a wash.

6.In case of crystal glassware, hand washing is better as it reduces the chances of its breakage.

7.After washing, make sure you carefully dry your glassware. It is better to place them on a drying board and wipe the glassware using a clean, micro fibre piece of cloth.

8.If you have to store your expensive glassware, it’s better to do so after giving it a quick wash with warm water. This is to ensure there is no stale smell and that no dust gathers on them.

9.Glasses with lids have to be stored with the lids removed to avoid cloudiness that forms with dampness.

10.Never store glassware in direct contact with sunlight or any heat source as this exposure to radiation spoils its appearance.

11.As any liquid stored in glassware leaves stains on it, make sure you frequently change water in glass flower vases. Also remove all useless leaves and flowers as they only end up sticking to the walls of the glass vase, making it dirty.

12.If you have to pour anything hot in the glass, you have to first dip the glass in cold water. This is to prevent any stress developing in the glass because of a sudden change in temperature.

13.Whilst washing glassware, make sure you wash everything individually so that they don’t collide with each other. This thus prevents breakage of glassware.

14.If you have to shift house, make sure you do so after individually wrapping glassware in soft paper. The glassware has to be packed in a box containing cushion material.

15.When cleaning glassware, use a brush with a plastic or wooden handle so that no scratches are formed over the glassware.

By following all these tips and techniques in maintaining your glassware, you can keep them safe and sparkling clean for a longer time.
