Photo books are a great and attractive way to keep your memories together, and make for fun and interesting projects as well. Here are some ideas for a photo book with a winter theme.

Taking Photographs:

The first thing you will want to make sure of when you are creating a book of winter is that you have your camera on you at all times. This should go without saying, of course, but it needs to become a habit. When you have your camera, you start to get in the mindset of taking photos all the time and you start to see things differently – with the eye of a photographer. Also the more photos you take, the better you will get at such things as lighting and composition.

Winter is a special time for photographers for many reasons. Amidst the bareness of the trees and the gray skies, there are lots of small moments of beauty to be found. Then, of course, there is the snow and last but not least, the major holidays.

No matter what the focus of your book is, you should make sure to take a lot of photos of both people and objects. There will be plenty of parties and family get-togethers, and you should document them all as best you can, of course. But you can also take walks around the neighborhood after that first big snow, catching images of how it blankets the branches, and just what ever catches your eye.

If you and your clan are the types to get up in the mountains and do some skiing and snowboarding, by all means capture the fun of those adventures in your camera. Even if you don’t engage in these types of activities, however, you can take car trips up onto the mountains on a nice sunny day and capture some of the vistas to be had.

When you are taking photos at parties, try to expand beyond the “say cheese” types of posed photos and get some candid shots. Also experiment with angles and lighting to get some interesting shots.

Do Some Writing:

Or at the very least, find some that appeals to you and use it. If you are the writerly type, you hardly need encouragement for this, but just as you keep your camera with you at all times, keep a small notebook in your pocket so you can write down your observations or funny moments as they happen, as well as notes that will help you write great captions for your photos. These little bits of text will help to keep your photo book interesting and help to enhance the memories as the years go by.

Arranging and Designing

Use Photoshop or a similar program to work with cropping and editing your photos. If you are adept at using layout programs such as Indesign or QuarkXpress, you can put your pages together that way. If not, there are templates you can find and download online, or you can even work with MS Word.

Printing and Binding:

Use a digital color printing process to get the nicest looking pages that you are able to.
