Truth is, adoption is not for everyone. Some people find joy in adopting an orphaned baby. Others can’t live with the thought of raising somebody else’s child as if it were their own. People have different feelings about adoption and we should all learn to respect that.

But God has this to say on the topic of adoption:

“Mordecai adopted an orphan he named Esther, as his own child. He loved her, raised her carefully, and she was a good and obedient daughter even into adulthood.” (Esther 2:7 on)

This is what the Bible verses say about adoption. Christians have practiced adoption throughout history. In fact some of the most prominent characters in the Bible wouldn’t have survived their childhood hadn’t they been adopted. We could’ve been living in a completely different world if adoption didn’t take place in the Bible. We could’ve been running a society far different from our own.

God favors adoption. That much is clear. He loves his children, every one of us, and through adoption He continues to find a way for us to spend our childhood as He had meant it. In the Bible several key characters were raised as an adopted child. They survived the harsh conditions of their time, became adults, and later went on to fulfill their purpose on this earth. God has a plan for each and every one of us.

This story is one for the books. After the king commanded all baby boys to be killed, a woman tried to save her newborn’s life by placing the baby in a basket and setting it to sail in the river. The basket floated down river until it was picked up by the king’s daughter. She took the baby home to her father. But the king loved his daughter so much he couldn’t find it in himself to deprive her of this tiny baby. So he agreed for her to raise him as her own child.

The king’s daughter asked a little girl to find a wet nurse for her new baby. This little girl, she had no idea, was the baby’s sister. The little girl brought a wet nurse who came and fed the baby, day after day, nurturing it to health. The wet nurse was the baby’s mother, the woman who had put the baby in the basket and set it afloat in the river.

It’s easy to see that God had a plan going on right there. The newborn child’s name was Moses.

In a way, all of us are orphans, and all of us are adopted by our parents. God gave all of us life. He is our Father and parent.
