English is still the lingua franca of the world. Whether you are doing business in South America or in living in Asia learning English is a critical part of of daily life. This is partially due to historic reasons, but is also do to the fact that English is one of the easiest languages to learn. That being said, it can be very difficult to master.

One of the great things about learning English is that when compared to learning of other languages the conjucations in the present tense are very easy. You start with an infinitive (such as “to walk” or “to learn”) drop the word “to”, and you are already done for the conjuration for 1, you, we and they. If you are conjuration for the third person, he, she and it, then all you have to do is add an “s” to the end of the word. One thing to keep in mind is that since the conjugations are so simular, you cannot drop the subject like you can in Spanish or French.

Here are the basic rules and examples on how to conjugate verbs in English.

For English verbs that end in a consonant plus “Y”, the “Y” changes to “I” and then you add “ES”. But if the “Y” is preceded by a vowel, the English verb simply follows the rules above.:

they study

English Verbs that end in O, S, CH, SH, X and Z simply add ES for the 3rd person singular (he/she/it).

we watch
they watch

The only difficulty in learning English is in the irregular verbs. Here is one example.

I have
you have
he/she has
it has

they have

Most of the irregular English verbs do not have any rules, you simply have to memorize them.

As we mentioned at the beginning, these rules are easy to learn but hard to master. The best way to master their uses is to work with a professional English teacher. For this you have many options. You can go and enroll at a local English school, but for many people that is not an affordable option. In larger cities such as London, New York or Tokyo English lessons can cost as much as $50.00 U.S. per hour. Another option would be for the student to find a tutor online that can give class over skype. This is usually a much more affordable option and it may even save the commute time you would experience in enrolling in a physical school. Finally, to really master English, you should go and travel to a country where English is spoken and practice! If learning English is your dream, do not give up. You will make it come true.
